Music for non religious ceremony or signing of the register

Postby admin » Tue Oct 28, 2021 3:50 pm

I've received numerous PMs and e mails asking for ideas for non-religious ceremonies or music that could be used at the signing of the register (if the celebrant allows!) so I thought I'd give you a few suggestions and people can add on their own ideas as well. So to get you all started -

When You Say You Love Me (Josh Groban)
Feels Like Home (Randy Newman - theme tune from the movie Michael)
Miracle (Foo Fighters)
What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)
You Light Up My Life
All I Ask of You (The Phantom of the Opera)
Over The rainbow (Eva cassidy)
At Last (Eva Cassidy)
Songbird (Eva Cassidy)
Come Away With Me (Norah Jones)
A World In Union
Unforgettable (Nat King Cole)
When I Fall In Love (Nat King Cole)
Love Changes Everything (Andrew Lloyd Weber)
We've Only Just Begun (The Carpenters)
Nella Fantasia (Theme tune from The Mission)
Sul Aria (From the Marriage of Figaro)
Cinema Paradiso (Katherine Jenkins)
True Love (High Society)

Hiya Siobhan,

I listened to Nella, and its absolutely beautiful...But do you think a harpist and also vocalist can pull it off or would i need an Opera singer?

If you have further suggestions i would love to hear them.

Thanks,
Lilo

HI LiloDB,

Saw your message to Siobhan and thought I'd make a suggestion. I'm having Canon in D by Pachelbel on violin, but the link below is a clip of it played on the harp, it is beautiful.

thanks for bumping this up no1mom - no idea how I forgot about this :o(

you wouldn't need an opera singer for nella (I'm not an opera singer) - you just need somone with a good voice to carry it off properly. Another beautiful one I'm doing is Caccini's Ave Maria but that really does need a classical voice. Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring is lovely on harp with voice and of course Canon as suggested by no1mom - there is a version with Alleluia sung through it so you can make use of your singer (check out Katherine Jenkins version and you'll hear it). Some people like The Wedding Song for their entrance.

hth and apologies again for not replying sooner

Non religious/signing of register

Postby BaroqueWindTrio » Tue Jun 30, 2022 7:23 pm

Hi everyone,
David here from Baroque Wind Trio. Among some of the most popular pieces we've been requested to play at non-religious/signing of the register are:

What A Wonderful World (Armstrong)
She moved through the Fair (Trad.)
Gabriel's Oboe/Nella Fantasia (Morricone)
Canon in D (Pachabel)
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Jazz standard)
Have I Told You Lately (Morrison)
Jesu, joy of man's desiring (Bach)
Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (Handel)
When I Fall In Love (Nat King Cole)
Air On A G String (Bach)
Everything I Do (Adams)
La Rejouissance (Handel)
Field's of Gold (Sting)
Flower Duet (Lakme)
Spring (Vivaldi)
Caledonia (Delores Keane)

Hope these suggestions are of some help. See the website for the extended repertoire list.

If you google:
"vitamin like hits" Dublin based string quartet has a huge list of non-religious instrumental music. It's been performed without lyrics - with most celebrants you can use it also during the church ceremony...

Does anyone know if celebrants have objections to music? I'm thinking 'Tonights gonna be a good night' for my exit and hoping they don't object!

hi lannah - if it's a church ceremony I would run your music by your celebrant before setting your heart on a particular piece. At the recessional there is usually a bit of leeway with what you can have but at the end of the day it still has to be cleared by the priest/reverand. Most are fairly flexible with your exit piece but some still insist on only hymns or appropriate secular pieces - each celebrant and diocese is different so the best thing to do is to contact the person that is conducting your ceremony and see what he says! Good luck

Check out Bron Yr Aur - its a beautiful, gentle acoustic guitar instrumental by Led Zeppelin. I've picked this for walking down the aisle. Yet to pick anything else for the ceremony though!!
