I'm sorry but you are not a doctor to be able to say what she do or doesn't have. This is why there is such a stigma about depression. Maybe your friend didn't go into it too much so you don't know exactly how she is feeling. And most times its hard to even describe to others how you feel.

Did you suggest she goes to counseling?
Yes depression is like being fed up buy multiplied by a million and every single day. Not fed up for an hour like "normal" people

I tend to agree with MrsSunflower...your friend needs your support.
It can be v difficult for someone who hasn't been through it to understand what you are going through. Though medications does work for some people, counselling & talking has an amazing amount of benefits.

Wow how lucky your friend has a doctor who'll listen to her anyway! :eek As the other girls have said she needs your support and kindness, not condemnation and judgement! I've been in the situation your friend is in now and it not fun at all. She probably only showed you the tip of the iceberg. Depressed people are quite unlikely to explain exactly how hard it is, what a struggle it is to get through the day, the unwillingness to even get out of bed because you feel like there's no point, the suicide fantasies you constantly play in your head, the self-loathing and feeling of worthlessness that you get from knowing that there's nothing in your life that's "depression worthy" in other peoples eyes yet you still feel miserable and you just can't turn that feeling off, hating but needing your medication to get you through the day etc. I had a few friends like you as well, and they'll stay in the past along with my depression for being quite uncaring (to put it mildly) so if you value your friend at all you should try at least understand what she's going through or just get out of her life and let people who really care about her step in.
When I was little my Mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "Happy". They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.

What a horrible thing to say.

My twin had depression and no one knew and thank god that our doctor diagnosed it!

I walked in on him in a horrible situation as he was about to take his life so don't you dare come on here and say that your friend "needs to cop on" - I personally would not like you as a friend if I knew that this is what you were thinking >:o(

My brother acted normally and no one knew that he had it. He use to be fed up but who does not be from time to time.

Thank god he is on the mend and everything is super now! :o)ll :o)ll

Depression is a very serious illness. I think it is difficult for people to understand it unless they have suffered from it or know someone close to them with it. But a GP would not prescribe an antidepressant unless the condition did not exist in the first place, they are trained to diagnose and treat all such illnesses. Drugs are only part of the treatment though, someone with depression also needs counselling or cognitive behavoural therapy and they definitely need to talk about it and need support +++.

welcome to my existence. im sure there are a lot of people like the original poster who think this about me. from the outside i probably seem to have it all.
im not ashamed to say i suffer from depression, but anyone i tell doesnt get to hear that i have my funeral planned. i know the songs that will be played. i was weaning off the anti depressants and had to go back to the doctor before christmas and had to be put back on my original dose. to say i felt like a failure is putting it mildly. why can i not cope without the drugs? i wish more than annything i wasnt depressed. my doctor asked about suicidal thoughts and i had to admit i have them. she asked me what was stopping me from doing it. i want to have a baby. probably the most selfish reason in the world to go on but a reason nonetheless. do you think OP that i would say that to a friend while out on the lash??!!!! could you imagine what would be said about me behind my back if i told a friend that every day is a struggle to get out of bed, that i feel i would be happier to never go to work but to stay in bed all day every day, but even when i do that i dont feel as good as i would think? that every day even showering makes me nearly have a panic attack because i cant face the world outside of my duvet-that i literally cannot take any more time sick off work without being fired but i just want to cry every single day im there. and i cannot afford to get sick + fired because if im not earning we will have ZERO income and wouldnt even be able to afford beans on toast.......

im sorry for the rant and if its upset anyone/makes them think im a freak but flip it. im sure youre friend is going through something similar and could you imagine your face if she told you that on a fun night out. the girl probably cannot win with you. she's "not depressed" for not giving you the ins and outs of her condition and you'd prob wish she hadnt asked if she had......

PrincessGoatTheDote :action32 Oh girl I've been there and I know exactly how you feel and it's the most sh!t feeling ever that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. It's so hard some days still, certain things give me panic attacks but I just want you to know that it can get better, there is life after the meds (hard to believe when you're constantly switching and upping doses I know) and if you ever need anyone to even just rant about how crap it all is pm me :action32

I really don't think you can judge anyone who says they are depressed! You really don't know everything that could be going on in your friends life! Depression is easy to hide when you are with other people! Trust me I have been there and I struggle everyday not to go back there!

Depression is a very serious illness! Your friend really needs support right now. I would hate for her to find out how you really felt when she was trying to confide in you!

Big hugs to PGTD and everyone else suffering from this illness

there is a huge stigma about depression in this country def.
i will admit a good friend of mine was diagnosed lately with mental health issues and i found it v hard to support her mostly because whenever i asked how she wasetc she would say oh im great and then hear about her being back in hosp after another atempted sucide.
she was also v malipulative and untrustworthy
it has taken me a while to learn how to support her and also how to take a step back and not support the condition but her if that makes sense?
it also helps that she is getting help nowand being honest that things are hard.
i guess what im saying is friendship is a too way thing and if yu dont have honesty then you have nothing. it probtook a lot of courage for your friend to even begin to talk about these problems
