Thanks for the elverys tip!

Well ladies its been ages since i have been on this thread, still running and have completed 2 10k mini marathons this yr, i usually run about 3/4 times a week of about approx 6k but i really want to start upping it, feel like my body has gotten used to this level.
I am hoping to do a half marathon, just wondering if anyone could advise the best way to up the running for this, at the moment i can comfortably run 10k.
I dont want to do too much too soon and be put off but if anyone has successfully gone from doing 10ks to 1/2 marathon i would greatly appreciate feedback :wv

Back on the running wagon now - good luck with your first run back - don't be too hard on yourself!

Thanks Daisy! I swear Im done with formal education- It was gruelling and exactly as you describe it-wasnt able to function on no sleep the way I could when I did undergrad and my skin broke out so bad and of course the lack of healthy eating and lack of exercise has a knock on effect on everything else!! I weighed myself today and am actually delighted I only gained 8lbs throughout the thesis process- I know some girls would cry about this but I was fully expecting to put on over a stone, there wasn't a takeaway I didnt give a recessionary boost to the last few weeks :o0

So I only had my first run this week and it was different to the usual as it was on a treadmill! I basically ran about 5k and it took me over 30 mins and I was happy enough and had an incline going on though I have no clue how much of a hill it was (In my head it was Everest sized :eek ). Must say I felt like a tool on the treadmill, so paranoid I'd get propelled off it I was running at the very top with my hand hovering over the emergency stop button- hope I can get a bit more relaxed on it. .

I got 3mths gym membership from a friend so will be doing more indoor exercise from now on but I think I prefer running outside-How do the rest of you feel about that?! Im going to do a gentle 10k in the morning outside and am looking forward to it and Iv been walking a good bit and even got a cycle in yesterday! (My bum is feeling the effects to day) so overall Im happy to be returning to some sort of normality exercise wise!

Daisy i just saw your post on another thread about the Nov 8miler- think Im going to give this a shot, it's a nice distance away to get the fitness up- Foxglove, this would prob be good for you too since your looking to increase on your 10kms!

Is anyone doing the Galway runs this weekend? Im raging im missing the 10km but im just not fit enough and Im so determined for a sub60 I want to get it on my next 10k! Also has anyone done the Santa dash runs?! I think it's the end of Nov but do ya have to wear a santa suit for the entire race :-8 ?!

Hey Girls

I plan on doing my first 10k on the 15th. I have spent months getting to a point were i feel I might actually be able to do it. Can you tell how much training is too much? The last two weeks i am running 7.5k- 5 days a week. I actually managed 10k in 45 mins yesterday, that was on the treadmill with a slight incline. Found it much easier than on the road! Do you think 5 days is too much to run?

Welcome back to normality wildone! Even though I dread the exercise when I have been away or whatever but once you get the first run in, it feels great to be back doing it! I totally agree with ya about it being easier to run outside than on the threadmill - I used to be the opposite, I'd happily trot away on the treadmill while watching home and away! But when you build up to the longer distances, running for more than an hour on the trhreadmill is just boring to me! Then a friend told me than outdoor running is way more beneficial - yes, you are burning the calories on the threadmill but you are not strengthening your legs in the same way as outdoor running - as in the threadmill is pulling you along rather than your legs propelling you forward if that makes sense???!!!! So even though it sucks going out in the bad weather we will lose some of our leg strength if we only do threadmill running apparently. :-(

MaryAlice1, 5 days sounds like alot and you might risk wearing yourself out in the run up to your race! One long run (so say 10k) a week and 2-3 shorter runs 5, 6 k is loads and then add in a bit of cross training like cycling or swimming or a class to build your fitness but not tire out the legs comepletely. No running for 2 days before the race so you have loads of energy. This is only my opinion now, each to their own training plan!!!!Like I was saying to wildone aswellm the threadmill running can feel easier than the road running as the threadmill is pulling you along a bit so defo get out on the road if you can, run on grass if its easier on your legs.

I will try to get out on the road a bit more, hate the rain though so will prob be a treadmill bunny this winter!

Thanks a mill for above, I will maybe cut down to 5 k on 2 days with 20 mins of crosstrain after ,10k x 2 and crosstrain another. I'll see how i go with that. :thnk

Running Buddies - I need your advice.

Am torn between a rock and a hard place. As you can see I had a baby boy last year and since January have been back running to get back to the pre-baby weight. Finally about a month ago I reached my weight goal.

But I wasn't running just to do that - in January I also signed up for a marathon on October 23rd. I did a half two weeks ago in 2hrs and 4 mins and ran 30km last Saturday week in 3 hours 14 mins.

And then last Monday I discovered I was pregnant with number 2. Was absolutely shocked. It was the last thing I expected and as I have very long irregular cycles I had just been putting my very delayed period down to transatlantic flights I took in August / September.

I'm currently tapering for the marathon and have just easy runs left - apart from the big one of course.

Even though last week I was absolutely gobsmacked with the idea of LO number 2, I have of course gotten used to the idea now and it's all good and I delighted that there's another one on the way.

BUT what do I do? Am I crazy to even consider running the marathon. The time limit is 6 hours.

Am I being too selfish? I'll be 10 weeks on October 23rd. I still have to talk to my gynae about it but can only get an appointment on October 18th and a scan - hopefully - on October 19th.

Your feedback is very appreciated - whatever your opinion.
Thanks

It could be worse Sposa! You could be 39 weeks :)

You should really consult your doctor. I have read before that if your body is used to running, then you should be able to keep it up as long as you keep your heart rate down. Perhaps wear a heart rate monitor, do a short run and see how you feel.

OOOHhhh, congrats sposa, that is such brilliant news and I'm delighted for ya! Now about the marathon, I'd defintiely get your doc to ok it - as mschat says, its ok to run when pregnant if your used to it but I'd say a marathon could be pushing your body a bit too much maybe??? Could you ask your GP maybe? Stick to your shorter easier runs until you get the ok. By the way, sounds like you are on track for a fanstastic time, well done!!!!

MsChat - maybe I should bring that article about the 39-weeks pregnant lady with me when I have my appointment next week! I've done the training and could logically follow her thinking - walk some, run some and just see if I finish it. As I said the time limit is 6 hours but I should really see what the limit is for the half way point because often they don't let you continue if you don't reach the 21km mark within a certain time.

Thanks for the good wishes Daisy. Have only told three people (apart from doctors etc.) - DH, my running buddy and another friend who I do a pilates course with. Some days I'm like "Yeah, I can do it" and other days I'm like "No, leave it S. You can do another one later without the worry"

Shall be interesing to see what the gynae says.

Will keep you updated.
Thanks girls.

It has been two weeks since my last run.... I feel like I'm confessing this to myself! Bad two weeks as my dad was in hospital and I just had no time to go out. Dreading it. Especially as it like a hurricane out there now! AAAAGGGGGHHHHH!

ah the weather is crap isn't it? I set the alarm early this morning to go out, alarm went off at 06.45am and so did the phone with it, couldn't move! I had hoped to go out this evening, looks like i will be hitting the gym instead. I completed my first 10k on saturday last, delighted with myself, did it in 1.01. I was hoping for less than 60 but hopefully i will improve on the next one.

Hi Guys!

Big congrats Sposa!!! What did the doc say about running the marathon?! I was looking at the article on that pregnant woman that ran the marathon and gave birth an hour later-amazing!!!!

Hope your dad is doing ok Daisy, no doubt it's been a tough couple of weeks but you are normally so dedicated you will get back to it no bother!!

Well done Mary Alice on your 10km!! You were close to breaking the hour!

Im VERY slowly getting back into fitness zone! Im not loving the treadmills at all so am gona keep up the gym but hopefully do 2outdoor runs per week. At the moment, I do an hour's walk every day and then the plan is to either do gym, run or a cycle. Must say the cycling is tough on the legs but hopefully it will aid the running. Im excited about finally getting back in fitness zone and might do a kick boxing class too.

I want to hit the ground running (pardon the pun!!! :o0 ) with 10kms next year!

Hi ladies

Said I would keep you upposted even if it took a little longer than initially planned.

Just a recap - was mulling over whether to do a marathon or not 10 weeks pregnant. In the end I decided to give it a go and just went slowly. I ran (at between 6:30 and 7 mins per km) the first 25 and then just slowed down to about 8 mins per km. The last 7km were so long. I must say that I was delighted to be finished (the Venice marathon was a little lacklustre compared to the Dublin one) and I did it in 5 hours 20 mins.

Managed to get out running again about three times since but unfortunately today is pouring and I really dislike running in the rain (have the luck that where I live it doesn't rain too much). Would recommend it to anyone who ran before getting pregnant - keeping up with the running, I mean, not necessarily the marathon as I was quite worried the week following it that I had done something crazy and wrong.

Hope you're all doing something - the thread has gotten quite but that's normal I guess once the running season is over.

Any Dublin marathoners?
