Depression

Depression

Postby I Dream in Disney » Thu Nov 03, 2021 1:18 am

Hi ladies, I know this bit of the forum seems to be pretty much entirely for weight loss, but it is a health & wellbeing question so wasn't sure where else to put it.

Do any of you suffer depression? Or have suffered it in the past? Have you noticed that after suffering it previously you are more likely to notice ongoing symptoms or have it again?

I had a fairly bad spell a couple years ago, and while I didn't seek help at the time, it took me a while to come to terms with it. (TBH, I'm still doing so.) I've noticed some things that I still do which kind of only kicked in when I started suffering (previous to really bad spell, I think it was underlying for a while.)

Basically I know that I'm fairly high functioning so I feel a bit stupid going to a doctor about it, but don't know what next steps to take and wanted to see if anyone has experienced similar.

hey Mrssmith2be, I've had stages in the past where I'm functioning on autopilot, feeling like I'm falling into a black hole, beating myself up over everything and not sleeping at night. The closest I got to a doctor was when I went in to complain about the insomnia and they gave me some sleeping tablets. If they'd asked me at the time if I thought I was suffering from depression I would have said yes but they just handed over the tablets. As a young teenager (again about insomnia) i was referred to counselling and this definitely helped.

Like yourself I feel I'm very high functioning, am generally a fairly positive person and nobody in a million years except my OH and my mother would ever dream that I was anything other than happy 100% of the time. I just seem to slip into a black hole every now and again.

Anyway, like I said not much help. I haven't felt awful in about 3 years now. I think a typical young person lifestyle of late nights, drink and food on the go was really contributing to it and my lifestyle is very different now. If it happen's again I will go for counselling rather than the GP as I feel they just hand over tablets as a solution.

HTH in some small way. your not alone at least

Thanks girls, I will pm you as well.
I absolutely do not want to go on tablets as I don't see how this cure the cause, it just masks the symptoms imo which is just a short term fix. I know a lot of doctors around here just hand over the pills, so I might have to fight to get referred, but I can't afford to go to private counselling. (In UK so should be able to get it on NHS)

I'm not ashamed by it either, it's an illness that anyone can get. This is why I wanted to reply here as well, so other people can see who might need to know they aren't alone either.

Thanks again for your advice. :thnk :thnk

girls please please please check qualifications before you employ the services of someone privately. Psychologist, Counsellor and Psychotherapist are not protected/regulated titles in Ireland so basically anyone can decide they want to be one and put a sign up outside their door.
do talk to your GP and they may be able to point you in the right direction of someone tried and trusted, also there may be HSE Primary Community and Continuing Care Teams in your area that have a Psychologist and you may be able to access a pschologist thru this on your Med card & GP. Unfortunately this may depend on your geographical area and how well staffed the team is but is worth checking out
Best of luck x

Just to give you all an update. I went to my GP this morning and he has agreed that I seem to be suffering from mild depression and is happy to refer me for counselling. I should get my appointment in the next few weeks.

I am going to discuss it briefly with my boss when I go in today. I'm just having a cup of tea while I wait for my eyes to go back to normal before I leave the house again!

Thanks for your support. I really feel that it contributed in a big way to actually making the step of speaking to my GP today. :thnk

mrssmith2be - an awful lot of depression runs through my family so I really feel for you. I constantly worry that I'll also suffer with it.

You've made the brave step of doing something about it so fair play to you. Between your GP and the counsellor you have every reason to believe you will get on top of this.

Take care & best of luck. X

Good for you Mrs.Smith,it's great you made the first step to getting better and I am delighted you said you're not ashamed by your depression. Mental health is STILL such a taboo topic, particularly in Ireland and it really bothers me. Mental health problems also run in my family and while I always told those effected to hold their heads up high that is was nothing to be embarrassed about but I'm afraid I was I did the total opposite when I discovered I also had a mental illness. It took me a long time to be able to listen to my own advice back and I know first hand how much courage it takes to be open about mental health. I really hope everything works out well for you and your start to feel like your old self soon, I'm sure you will xxx :action32

I first got treatment for depression at 17. Tbh I needed it long before then but was refusing all assistance. Just had my first baby and I have bad enough pnd. During the pregnancy I was referred to the mental health services through the hospital as my severe spd was affecting my mood too. I now have a nurse calling every week and have had my medication changed. It's still kicking in. Every day is a battle. I didn't leave the bedroom yesterday until 6 pm before hubby came home. Thank god my baby boy is such a good placid baby or I'd probably have been admitted to hospital by now.
I'm not sure how my poor me moan helps you though so I'm sorry xx

Sandy - big hugs for you :action32 Don't they say it takes at least 3 weeks for the tablets to kick in. Hopefully that means that you will feel a lot better in time to enjoy your first Christmas as a Mammy.

I know when you feel so low the last thing you want is to get out of bed and face the world but if you could try and force yourself out for a 15 minute walk each day just to get some fresh air and sunshine it might help lighten your mood just a little.

Take care of yourself. X
