Cross Trainer v Rowing Machine

Cross Trainer v Rowing Machine

Postby ChristmasBride2010 » Sun Nov 06, 2021 1:26 am

Hi,
for weighloss and toning purposes which is the most effective and quickest achieving machine---- a cross trainer or a rowing machine?
i have left a treadmill out of this option as i have done couch to 5k on the road and sometimes my knee kicks up a little so i suspect it would be the same with a treadmill.
Im thinking of buying one of the above machines, i have used both in the gym but would like to buy one so i can exercise at home and achieve results quickly (ie before Xmas!!) in conjunction with healthy eating.

Thanks!! :o)ll :o)ll :o)ll

I have both a rowing machine and cross trainer and the rowing machine is just for toning and strength, where as the cross trainer is a full cardio work out, if using the cross trainer to achieve maximum results you have to keep the rpm (revolutions per min) above 60 and this way you will really sweat and it will give you a great work out! Anything below 60 is just like a brisk walk and won't do a whole lot, once used properly I'd defiantly say the cross trainer!

Hi ChristmasBride2010 well I'd definitely go for the cross trainer option, I joined a gym and focus a lot of work on the cross trainer, and since starting a weight loss programme at the end of September i'm down 7.5cm/3inches on my thigh! now even though the scales is static i do feel much better and have resolved to throw the scales out the window! As other posters have said its better to focus on the inch loss!

I am going to buy a xtrainer my friend is a Physiotherapist and said this is better constant jogging ground/treadmill could hurt you knees/joints more than a xtrainer also it is a better all over workout.
Now just have to do research and find a reasonably priced xtrainer that will fit in my house

Hi CB,

Great post!. My area of expertise. The rowing machines are great and as you can see by looking at the movement, you are using most muscles in the body, a good machine for toning and getting your fitness levels up. The thing is you have to be shown how to row properly in order to get the full benefits from this machine. As you are coming back on the rower, you have to pull the handle hard to feel extra resistance on the movement. Hope that makes sense.

The cross trainer is great also, do some interval training on it, work out your heart rate training zones, (i can help there if you need it) and get sweating.

In relation to running outdoors versus treadmill, bear in mind that every time you run outdoors especially on cement, FOUR TIMES your body weight is going through your joints via force. That is why it is common to get joint pain from outdoor running. Treadmills are a lot easier on the body and I feel as a trainer, get the best results. Try all three machines and whichever get your sweat up most is usually the one to go with for six weeks or so. I know you will hate the machine that makes your work the hardest, but you are investing your limited time on using the machine that gives you the best bang for your buck.

Hope this helps you decide.

Best regards
Michael
