Re: Preparation for a 10k run
I ran a relay of a marathon which was 7miles / 11.5k a while ago. I managed to run the whole thing without stopping whereas the previous longest run I had done was 5k (started the couch to 5k programme back in May!). For the three weeks before the marathon I concentrated on building up the distance so I was going out 3 or 4 evenings a week and walking/running combination for 8 or 9k. Even if I just managed to run 3 or 4k I do think building up the distance I was travelling helped. It also helped my body to learn to cope with constantly moving for 1hour or 1.5hours.
Now I am just an amateur running so not sure if this was the right technique but it worked for me. I did it in 1 hour 14 mins and was delighted with that time. Was hoping to get another 10k in before dark evenings but haven’t managed it so it will probably be early next year before I do another one. My saving grace that helped me the day of the marathon was really good music and its true what they say that the atmosphere of the race does help you along with people cheering etc. Good luck with it! ![]() Re: Preparation for a 10k run
That sounds like really good advice, I'll try that. Thanks very much for your help!

Re: Preparation for a 10k run
If you are running 5K you shouldn't have a problem doing 10K in 3 weeks. Usually the momentum of the race and adrenilin keeps you going anyway. Work on running a bit further each time you go out for a run making sure you give yourself breaks between runs too. Also I'd take a break for 2-3 days before the race and make sure you eat some good carbs the evening before the race.
Best of luck. I bet you won't have a problem, just take it easy. Edited to correct spelling!!
Re: Preparation for a 10k run
Thanks a million. Fingers crossed. I managed to run for about 40 mins on Tue night but unfortunately my back has been sore since, so I wont be able to get in as many training sessions as I hoped before the run. Anyway I'm sure I'll survive it!
