If you need to lose weight quick (avoid if possible), the best way bar none I've seen is the Velocity diet. It's fairly extreme and I've never seen women doing it but I don't see why it couldn't work for them too.

Over the long term, I favour a Paleo style approach and has kept me lean and muscular (as opposed to the skinny-fat you see so often) for years,
The best resource I've found on weight loss in general is a book called Why We Get Fat and What To Do about.
I've also heard good things about the Primal Blueprint, but have no experience with it. This one is from the guy from http://www.marksdailyapple.com, which is a great resource in itself.
