Leg Ulcer query

Any doctors/nurses out there? looking for some advice my mother in her late 70's living on her own just developed a venous ulcer inside leg near ankle the doctor has dressed it, I googled as much as I could ie not walking much on it, keeping it elevated and changing the dressing regulary.
I dont really know much about them and I thought it was from a fall she had a couple of mths ago but seemingly can be common in the elderly and with a varicose vein history.
She is a little forgetful so I get bits of info from her as to what the doctor says I want to try and help her say if there is any natural things she could take to heal the wound.
I saw that Manuka honey is supposed to be good she is not overweight, a smoker or diabetic. The ulcer is quite red and hot and about the size of a 20c, and open wound and is sore for her to walk on. The doctor today gave her a course of Penicillin to clear the infection. I wonder should I try getting the honey for her I might ask the Dr first as dont want to go against his judgement its seemingly great stuff for fighting infections I guess if you have an ulcer you would have to apply it topically and not tablets I dont know though it you can use it with other medication. Couldnt find info on the internet
