Asthma help please??

Asthma help please??

Postby snooki » Tue Apr 10, 2022 7:42 pm

Ok I dont want to sound like im whinging or that there are not worse things out there but im just feeling so down and deflated. My chest has been giving problems since January. Got a bad chest infection and has just been really bad since. Now I've always has problems with my chest anytime I get sick it goes straight to my chest but anyways I saw a specialist in the hospital a few weeks ago and had my tests (lung function and allergy) done this morning and have found out today that I have Asthma. I am on Symbacort turbohaler twice a day and ventolin 4 times a day as the take as and when you need is not working. I have a constant cough, constant wheeze in my throat, Shortness of breath and tightness in my chest. Now the nurse has assured me that the inhalers will help and that if it is not any better in a month I will also be put on a tablet with my inhalers. I am overweight and I know by loosing weight it should help but now if I walk 5 steps I am out of breath and small things that I use to so are now a struggle. I really just need advise from other asthamatics out there, will this get any better?? Now I cant climb 1 flight of stairs but I need my ventolin and cant walk a few steps but im out of breath. Am just so fed up and I thought that the tests today would all be ok and that is was just a bad chest infection that wouldnt go away. i also had allergy tests done and I am allergic to grass and dust. Sorry for going on just need to vent and also need advice. Anything I can do to help this or is this something that I am going to have to live with or will it eventually get better???? Not to mention the extra cost this mputs on us and we are already struggling to save for the wedding each month Thanks

Hi Snooki,

I have asthma too but unlike you I've had it my whole life and it can be a right pain sometimes.
I'm sure by now you are feeling better, you should be able to get it to a comfortable level - you should definitely be able to climb stairs!!! I wish I could tell you that it won't hold you back at all but it can be a problem at times. I find it hard when it comes to exercising as I get out of breath very fast - the best thing to do is try to gradually increase how much exercise you can do and you will improve, I can jog for 15 mins no problem now, I couldn't jog for 5 a year ago. I know that doesn't sound like much but it is a good achievement for me. Regular exercise without over doing it will really help loosen up your lungs I would really advise you to try and exercise as much as possible, even just fast walking!

In terms of inhalers I am on symbicort 400 and ventolin but I hope by now you are mostly just using symbicort - if you need to use ventolin 4 times a day you need a higher symbicort!! I only use ventolin maybe once every other day now and my asthma is pretty bad. I know how expensive symbicort is >:o( It is a pain when you are trying to save - so just in case your doctor hasn't made you aware there are cheaper options out there (becotide etc), symbicort just seems to be a very popular choice at the mo but I used bectotide with ventolin for years and worked well.

Theres f**k all you can do about the grass allergy I think :o0 but dust affects me big time too so I have no carpet in my house other than on the stairs and I hoover daily and dust twice a week to keep that side of things under control (I have indoor dogs so I need to hoover daily for that reason more so than any other). You can also try air purifiers - I have been told these work well but I haven't tried them yet. And FINALLY (sorry I'm on a major ramble) you could look into this technique called Buteyko - this is meant to work wonders for asthmatics - I am seriously considering doing a course in it! check out http://www.buteyko.ie for more info.

Anyway I do hope by now you feel a whole lot better, it can be a big annoyance but you get used to it :)

All the best X

I have asthma too (and hayfever) - since I was about 16 - and to be honest, I've always used it as an excuse as to why I couldn't exercise. In all honesty, I was lazy and unfit - I'm not suggesting this is you at all btw - but I recently decided enough was enough (for my wedding dress) and I started the couch 2 5k...most days I'm fine but sometimes my chest tightens and I just slow down to a walk. Like Must Love Dogs, I can now run 30 minutes - which is amazing...now it's been a year on and off in the making!! Basically my point is, it shouldn't hold you back, you just might have to work a bit longer to get back to a point where you feel comfortable again...maybe start with slow walks and work from there? It gets better, trust me!! :) Just make sure to have your ventolin with you!!

In 2009 I switched to Seritide.... it was a life changing decision.
I am now able to go out without my inhaler and my asthma is full treated.
It is expensive at €110 p.m but my whole quality of life has bettered from using it.

I have to agree with the other posters. A bit of excercise helps so much with asthma.

I've had it all my life - started to grow out of it when I was in my early teens and then being the twit that I am I started smoking and it came back with a vengence. I managed to quit smoking a few years ago, but the asthma is here to stay.

About four yrs ago my asthma got quite bad and I ended up with a respiratory infection that lasted 8mths. I basically couldn't move or talk without nearly coughing up a lung!! I was off work for three weeks and then I decided that enough was enough. I was about 2-3 stone overweight for my height and I knew that wasn't helping my asthma so I started off doing some walking. It nearly killed me at the start but I kept at it and I started getting fitter and fitter and my asthma got better and better.

Now I'm on Seratide and while it's expensive, my asthma is pretty controlled and I'd rarely need to take my Ventolin. It's funny though how excercise helps keep it under control - I've stayed fairly fit over the last couple of years and I haven't had as much as a cough. I even ran the mini-marathon in June (something I never thought I'd be able to do!!). But due to injury and various other reasons, I haven't been able to excercise over the last 5 weeks and my asthma got bad again. I had to up my Seratide for about a week to get it back under control, but I did manage to avoid going to the doctor.

I know a lot of people suggest swimming for asthmatics. Personally, I don't like swimming but it might be worth considering.
