How much B12 ?

How much B12 ?

Postby Butttons » Fri Apr 20, 2022 10:23 am

Hi girls, how much b12 should we be taking? Nurse asked me yesterday was a taking folic acid and b12. I said yes but I actullay don't know if I am taking the right dose of B12 ( I shuld have asked!). I'm taking Pregnacare preconception. There is 20ug of B12 and 400ug folic acid. Is that enough? Sorry if this sounds a bit silly...

hi buttons - I haven't heard of B12 for fertility before so not sure how much you need (and not sure why its needed). I take B6 - this is to improve my mucus, but I understand it also supports the Luteal Phase of our cycles. I also take FertilityPlus which contains 20ug of b12 (in 2 tablets) as well as all the other major support for fertility, incl. 400ug folic acid.

Buttons, from what I've read B12 is more for when baby is developing in your womb, I haven't hear about it relating to fertility but maybe it does. Anyways most breakfast cereals are fortified with it and you'll find it in dairy products and meat. As far as I know women get enough from their diet for that reason.

Hey Buttons, before ever starting my TTC journey, I was diagnosed as being deficient in B12 and it took me over a year to build it back up to acceptable levels, Its a while ago now but I think I was on one injection a month for six months at least, so if your were deficient I think it would be vital to be building back up your level especially when VB12 is needed in pregnancy. Most Vitamin B12 comes from meat or other animal-based food sources. Also I think Metformin may deplete V B12.

Got this info from the net!
If you're trying to get pregnant, make sure you're eating enough foods rich in Vitamin B12. New research published in this month's Pediatrics suggests women with low levels of Vitamin B12 just before or after conception are more likely to give birth to children with neural tube defects, according to the National Institutes of Health, Trinity College Dublin, and the Health Research Board of Ireland.

The research suggests that the same attention given to folic acid levels should be applied to Vitamin B12 levels.
