Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Hi ladies i'm just wondering what exactly seems to be the general "thing to do" so to speak re paying the church etc. When we initially booked the church for our wedding we had to pay 200e to basically even get the date we wanted. Now I know there's always a sum given to the sacristan but do you also have to pay the priest a sum of money too? and if so how much?!!
Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Yes you have to pay the priest as well. When we booked our church they gave us a sheet with information and I'm pretty sure it was termed a donation and therefore the amount is really up to you but it had a guideline of 150 for the priest and 50 for the sacristan, I haven't thought about it too much yet but I imagine we'll give at least that much.
Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Ok so there's the initial 200e plus say 50e for the sacristan and then another chunk of money for the priest too? See I wasn't sure if the 200e counted to cover the money for the priest! Obviously not then! whoops! if i hadn't checked here i would have no envelope on the day!
Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Yip €200 for renting the church (usually only charged if you are not a parishioner)
Then usually €50 for sacristan and €150 for priest. Also €20 each to the alter servers aswell. Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Jebus Mary and Holy St. Joe! Thanks morningsun! I would have had the altar servers left high and dry too! big whoops!!!
![]() as for if you're not a parishioner part, its the parish i grew up in spent 27 years of my life but only living in the neighbouring parish now!!! balls! ![]()
Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Haha no worries! Although charging you for the use of the church doesn’t seem right at all! In our local area, the priests are very reasonable and only charge non-parishioners for use of the church, even if I was still living away in Dublin I wouldn’t get charged as it is where I grew up. Some priests really don’t help with the anti-catholic church sentiment that is all over the country these days!! Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Really useful thread....was just wondering about how much you need to pay priest, sacristan, alter servers etc
I didn't realise (quite naiively) that you have to pay to use the church. Hopefully as I will be using the parish I am living in, we won't have to pay for the church ![]()
Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Hi nifty thrifty
well the parish i'll be getting married in is the one i was baptised in made the communion and confirmation in etc and i still had to pay! from what i can tell it seems to depend on the individual parishes, they all seem to have their own way of doing things!
Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
I was baptised, made my communion and was confirmed in my church and I HAVE to pay a DONATION of €400

As my little niece says.........................what in the name of nancy! Those "donations" are unreal, where are they going charging that straight off the mark??? In saying that I'll probably end up having to pay something similar when the sacristan etc are covered too, bloody infuriating really

Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Wow! Them amounts are unbelievable. If anyone is unsure ask your priest – I rang the parish office and asked straight out do they have a list of suggested donations after reading about it on here but they didn’t. also its handy to ring the parish office and not say who you are and they will tell you without you having to give your details if you are too embarrassed to ask straight out.
I am getting the priest and church for a reasonable price so with only having to pay for the priest! €450 ![]() Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
Its getting closer to the wedding and were starting to thinking about that too. We have priest outside of the parish marrying us and he is invited to the meal how much would be acceptable to give him? Its probably silly question when and who gives him the envelope? Thanks

No less than €150 to the priest doing your mass I would say. I plan on giving the envelopes to the best man to hand out on the day, he would be a reliable sort anyways but all the big things like band/church music (more than €500) I am going to do a bank transfer or cheque. Re: Paying the church, sacristan & priest//....
thanks morningsun! I also forgot to ask when do you give donation to the church the parish priest said nothing about any money for the church but a donation is a must. He wont be around on the day so how and when would we give it to him?
