grammar rant

grammar rant

Postby mackenzie » Sun Mar 04, 2022 4:52 pm

I know 2 people (and now I'm not saying I'm perfect) but this bugs me
these 2 guys are friends but they did not go to the same school, so eg,
"you should have coming with me"
"you should have going out"
"we should have winning"
etc etc
It has come to a stage where I have corrected one of them and he cannot see what's wrong.
Drives me mad...................

Thank you for bringing this up. These are a few examples I have noticed that some people get wrong all the time and it drives me nuts. I know I have little to be annoying me :-8

You're= short for you are
your= possession eg. your bag
Loose= ill fitting/too big etc. Example: Your trousers are loose.
Lose=to misplace something. Example: Did you lose your wallet?
There= Example: There were three of us at the party.
Their= Again, possession. Example: Their bag was just stolen.
They're= Short for they are.

+1 on the you're/your/their/they're/there - basic rules taught in primary schools, and again repeatably in secondary school!!

While we're on the topic...(you may be sorry that you started me off!)

- Pacific as opposed to specific i.e. "one pacific time..."

- them followed by a plural, i.e. them people, them things, them issues...it's those!!!

Many more but these are my top two anyway!!!

uh oh, this always drives me mad.. here's my pet peeves:

"I seen it yesterday"
"I done that yesterday" grrr!!!

Plenty more I'm sure but those really drive me mad! Also living in the north of England at moment and I really love their unique little phrases, but one particular one drives me demented..

"I've forgetting to bring this with me" or "have you forgetting something"

It's FORGOT!!! :yelrotflmaosmilie:

Or one of my biggest bug bears (apart from the actual usage of the phrase bug bear, shudder) is "I'm board"

Makes me want to grab a board and whack them upside the head with it.

This bothers me - a lot (alot being another common mistake) of people I went to school with do this on their FB's - we went to the same school - I KNOW they're somewhat educated!!

Also, the excusing it with "Ah but I'm dyslexic". Sorry, but that's not good enough. H2B is dyslexic and only makes mistakes when he is very tired and/or under pressure. FMIL is dyslexic and has a masters degree in education. If they can do it then so can everyone else, please don't use dyslexia as your excuse for laziness.

Finally - an ex of mine used to use the expression "the door is in a jar" (the door is ajar). I used to want to put his head in a f*cking jar every time I heard him say that :o0
-Let's eat Grandpa
-Let's eat, Grandpa

Correct punctuation can save lives...

I will probably get lynched for this one, but people who say/write 'mom' instead of MUM really infuriate me.

Its MUM. We are IRISH. Not American!

Drives me effing bananas.
