Do you want the bloody work or not???

Do you want the bloody work or not???

Postby PaniniRoses » Wed Apr 18, 2022 10:10 am

All I want is to get our bathroom suite replaced and I can't get a bloody plumber to get back to me with a complete quote for everything we've asked (and shown) him we want done O:| First guy, recommended by a local bathroom place, came out, seemed great but never bothered getting in touch again and the second guy, who was recommended by two family members, has taken more than 3 weeks to get back to me, after me chasing him repeatedly, and now has come back with a quote for only half the bloody job. O:| O:| O:| O:|

It's great that there's loads of work out there for some people...

I've been that soldier! Posted about it on here before. We got a bit of work done on the house over the past six months and every single tradesman was hassle to deal with, be it getting quotes, turning up late and messing us about. I really thought this kind of mentality had died out a bit but there's obviously still the attitude of doing you a favour about getting work done.

If I had a son / daughter, I'd tell them to be a plumber because we had so much hassle even getting a plumber to quote us last year for similar job to yours paniniroses. I was tearing my hair out. And when we did start the job, the number of times I had to ring and plead / beg with the plumber to come back and finish the job - a 2 week job turned into 3 months. He had no concept of time. O:| O:| O:|

Best of luck with the job - just one thing with quotes - ensure you have everything in writing. It's amazing how the cost suddenly increases - he did tell you that you would need x, y, z but you must have forgot. If you have your quote in writing - you have proof, it wasn't on it. Lesson learned the hard way..

God, it's so frustrating isn't it? And depressing that with the constant barage of "no jobs news" some contractors think it's ok to puddle customers off. I'm self employed and I bend over backwards to get quotes and project plans to customers. Why? I like getting paid!

I decided to sod the two of them and posted an ad on onlinetradesmen.ie. I got 8 emails within about 4 hours and 3 followed up with calls! Going to get a couple of them to give me a quote and see what happens, fingers crossed I'll finally get to have a bath before this baby arrives!

We have just had some tiling work done and I have to say the tiler was amazing, reasonable , efficient etc. Just what you want.
I have his number if anyone is looking for a tiler around the Drogheda area PM me.
We are getting him back to do the ensuite & we asked him for a recomendation for a plumber who is suppose to be calling today to quote us so I will keep you all posted. Fingers crossed I may be able to recommend a plumber too

Work is going to start on Monday ...Phone rings and his brother house had a big fire wont start till next week. Next week arrives and no sigh wont answer phone.
Phones on week 3 will start on Monday. Monday comes and goes no sign , no answer from phone. 8 am on Tuesday and there they are ready to start. Great says i. Works all day Tuesday and Wednesday and then i dont see him for another week.No answer from phone.
Txt late at night to say he will be there in morning. Shows up , does work and then nothing for another week.
House upside down windows not properly fitted, FREEZING . Phoning phoning phoning , leave messages that if he does not sort it soon not to come back. Phone painter and tiler to tell them work not finished be another week.
Txt late at night , sorry uncle died , be there in morning.Work all day spend half an hour asking me for payment , to say i loose the plot is such an understatement.
Dont see him for another week , sorry kids really sick . Wont answer phone will only chat to hubby cause he is easier going.

Oh god yes completely agree with this and cannot believe its still going on during a recession. What I hated most was the attitude they have and the absoulte crap they tell you - i suppose its just years of coming up with one liners to get the customer to either understand why its taking so long or how much its going to cost.

In the last few months we have had tiling done, new bathroom and loads of plumbing and i can honestly say they all came with their problems! Need to get the house painted next and am torn between getting a guy who did it before for us who we had no problems with but was expensive and getting someone cheaper we dont know.

These stories make me so angry! We've been in our house nearly six years and have gotten our bathroom, kitchen and tiling done in that time and we've had nothing but hassle from tradesmen. We only ever got one fella who was fantastic. He was a tiler, did a brilliant job, on time, at the price he stated and left the place absolutely spotless after himself. Unfortunately next time we went to get him to do other tiling he'd retired :o(

Since then we've had fellas turning up late (if they bother to turn up at all)- a BIG deal when you've taken time off work to wait for them to arrive, do crap quality work, leave the place filthy. And they wonder why tradesmen have a bad reputation? You'd think nowadays especially they'd get their act together and be professional. Have all the decent ones emigrated or something?? We have another little bit of work to do on our bathroom (some of it due to a rubbish job done by the last crowd a few years ago) and we wanted to get it done before baby arrives but we just cannot face going through the palaver with tradesmen again so we're leaving it off for a few months at least! O:| O:| O:|
