It's your wedding, your day so do as you please. Just nod and smile and say yes I'll think about it and then walk off and don't think about it!

That is excellent advice for ALL wedding-related comments by anyone at all!

Excitedlady you do your thang and ignore everyone, you will be stunning - there have been a few "non-traditional" brides who have put up wedding reports here, and they were all just radiant.

Not wearing a veil or a white dress or whatever the hell else does not make you any less of a bride. What is the point of trussing yourself up into other people's image of what you "should" do if you won't feel like yourself on your own day of celebration?

Go for it! (I'd love to know what you're wearing now, gwan givvus a look ;o) )

Thing to remember is that everyone will have opinions and tell you what you should or shouldn't do for your wedding, that's definitely my experience!
but after the day, the only person who will regret something that you did or didn't do for the wedding is you! So do what you want to do and feel good doing it, knowing that you aren't the one who is going to regret it

EVERYBODY will have an opinion on what you should/shouldn't do, so IMO I would either take everything that anyone says with a nice smile and say 'Thanks I never thought of that' or tell people next to nothing about your plans!

- I wore a 'different' kind of dress
- We had no communion in our wedding ceremony (as I am a non-believer and wanted a civil service but hubbie wanted church so we met half way at a compromise)
- We didn't do 'Plus One' on invitations for our single friends (who all knew each other anyway)
- We didn't send out R.S.V.P.'s stamped with our invitations and gave people three options 1. Postal Address 2. email address 3. Phone/text

The more you tell people the worse off you will be sometimes!

And remember, the thing people will remember most about YOUR day is (a) The Weather and (b) The Craic!

And to finish, People who mind don't matter and people who matter don't mind.

Enjoy the planning x

I feel your pain, I was shocked at peoples reaction to the way I want to do my wedding, we're going aboard and I'm sick of people giving me a blank look when I reveal some info about what we're doing.... I've learnt to be assertive and reply nicely with comments like 'well you can do it that way when its your day'. Oh, I have stressed to them all that I fully understand if people can't go as it is an expensive ask of people.

My sister is posing the biggest problem, I'm not having a religious wedding, only civil, I'm not having flowers (the venue is stunning on a beach), not having a wedding cake, not getting my hair professionally done etc....I think she is going to have a heart attack, she cannot understand it at all, when we went to look at bridesmaids dresses, she picked out black long formal dresses, she can't understand that it is an informal, chilled out celebration on a beach....where is she going with a long black formal dress., the groom is only wearing a shirt.....

And if I hear one more person say that we're going to Spain because it is cheaper I will SCREAM.....
We are not going to Spain because it is cheaper -
1. IT IS NOT CHEAPER (the venue is more expensive than home)
2. I've always wanted a wedding aboard.
3. I lived there before.

Sorry I've gone off on a rant............

I have every confidence in our weddings plan, be it they are sightly different, a (stress only slightly) and I'm sure they are all going to have a great time, I can't wait now.....

Basically, what I'm saying is, DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!! ITS YOUR DAY AND YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT.
And you just have to leave all their comments run off you (no matter how infuriating they may be)

STICK TO YOUR GUNS

Your post made me smile today! I have visions of a trouserless groom wearing only a shirt (if that's what you're into!) on the beach beside your sister with a formal long black dress :o0

Thanks for all the replies girls. Made me feel better about things :)

I'm not wearing something off the wall. My dress is a "standard" wedding dress. I have decided though that my accessories are all going to be blue. I'm wearing a blue crystal necklace and bracelet, I've made my own blue bouquet and I'm not having flowers in the church and the amount of comments I've had is unreal. I'm also making the buttonholes for the lads.

Went to try my dress on the other day and was the sales assistant said "no, i don't like the necklace" straight out! "Oh don't get me wrong, its a lovely piece but it just doesn't belong" worst thing was my bm began to agree with her knowing full well I love the jewellery.

I'm sick of comments and "looks" when you tell or show people stuff. I should have kept it all to myself until the day. grrrr

i had a civil ceremony, didnt have a wedding car, made my own 'wedding' cake, made my own bouquet and the buttonholes for the men and wore colourful shoes.

only listened to the comments i got on my wedding day about how great everything looked especially my shoes! and they looked brilliant in the photos and ive seen a good few weddings after with the same thing!

go with what u want cause you'll always regret not going with your own ideas
