Have you found counselling helpful for stress?

As the title says, have hit a bad patch, bit overwhelmed, while putting on an outward show of 'being fine', and my doctor has suggested counselling for stress. Has anyone had counselling for stress and if so, did you find it helpful?

Hi Polly,

I didn't have counselling directly for stress - I had gone through a bad break up and felt everything getting on top of me. But it most definitely helped relieve stress. Just simply having someone to talk to and offload your feelings onto once a week without feeling like you are burdening them etc was a massive help.

It's worth a shot anyway for your own wellbeing. X

Didnt have counseling just for stress but had it when my parents seperated and I felt my life was spiraling out of control and falling apart so i suppose that is stress enough! Really helped deal with my emotions! I would recommend it to anyone!

Thanks a million, ladies, I really appreciate your responses. Yes, it is a feeling of things being out of my control, things getting on top of me, and not having the confidence that I believe I did have, in the past, to assert myself to deal with things.

Brief update-rang a counsellor, who appeared more interested in 'how / where I got her number'...er, um, from my doctor... than in actually helping me. O:|
Oh and if I was working fulltime this would cost me x... etc.

Anyway, I went with a recommendation I had received elsewhere, and found a lovely counsellor.
Thanks again to those who replied both on the forum, and via p.m. A friend in need is a friend indeed!! :action32
