Biography of Sarah-Ellen Murphy

Sarah-Ellen Murphy is a student of Olive Cowpar in Limerick. She achieved an Honours Diploma in singing from the London College of Music and Media. She has a Bachelor of Education Degree with music from Mary Immaculate College.

Sarah was the recitalist at the opening night of the Kate O’ Brien Weekend in 2012. As part of her recital she performed the Irish premi�re of four songs composed by Fiona Linnane and written by Mary Coll. In December 2011 Sarah had the honour of performing the Contralto Solo in Handel’s Messiah in the University Concert Hall for President Michael D. Higgins. Over the past number of years she was the Contralto Soloist in oratorios with Limerick Choral Union, Mary Immaculate College Choir, the Galway Choral Association and the Summer Music on the Shannon Choir. She has an extensive oratorio repertoire including; Handel’s Messiah, Jenkin’s Armed Man, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Jenkin’s Stabat Mater, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, Missa Brevis in D and Coronation Mass in C.

Apart from oratorio her other performances have been; The Irish Ring in Tipperary, the Irish premi�re of two Andrew Toovey songs with the CoMA Limerick Ensemble, the Irish premi�re of four songs by Virgil Thompson and three songs by R. Murray Schafer both with the Summer Music in Galway Quintet, concerts with the Summer Music on the Shannon Orchestra in Limerick and Galway and lunchtime concerts in Mary Immaculate College and Saint Mary’s Cathedral.  

In 2006 she received first prize in the Contralto Solo competition in Feis Ceoil in Dublin. She was awarded the Margaret Dillon Memorial Trophy for Overall Voice of the Feis in Feis Maiti� in Cork. Sarah-Ellen won the Mc Donagh Bursary award and Voice of the Feis in F�ile Luimn�. Over the years she won first prize in all major competitions in  F�ile Luimn�.

Sarah-Ellen played many leading roles in Youth Operas with Summer Music on the Shannon. She was a finalist with the All Ireland Talent Search which took place in the National Concert Hall. This was broadcast live on RT� Radio 1, on which occasion she sang the Seguidilla from Carmen.  She is the director of Raheen Church Choir and has established herself as a favourite soloist with them.
