Re: What Do You Think Of This Idea??
That's what I was thinking FinickyFi, I'm going to put Afternoon Tea Reception on invites so there's no chance of confusion! And other that that, I'm shutting up about it anymore! Tired of all the bitchiness from Oh's side! As already mentioned, my side all thinks its a great idea... may have something to do with the fact that my parents love OH, and oh's parents really really do not like me! Stealing their baby away... :-D Sigh!
Re: What Do You Think Of This Idea??
Fair enough, just do it for the right reasons and not to spite them!
Re: What Do You Think Of This Idea??
I wouldn't hold it against them that they hate the idea - although I'd hold it against them alright if they can't be polite about it.
Personally - I'd absolutely love it. My other half would hate it. Really hate it and feel very uncomfortable at it. He doesn't like finicky food and just wouldn't get the Afternoon Tea thing. He needs a good few pints before considering going near a dance floor. Now he'd put a brave face on I'm sure - but I think it'd be nice to acknowledge that there may be guests that do feel a little uncomfortable and would be more relaxed in a more typical wedding scenario - I think the important thing would be to make an extra effort to put them at their ease when they arrive at the venue - just personal chit-chat. Make them realise that they don't have to act like royalty to enjoy it - cos I know that's what my H2B would be worried about. Hope you have a fantastic day and I'm sure it'll be loved by most.

Oh coogee, that's gas! My mum actually rang me today and said close on the same thing! That they may just not be comfortable with the afternoon tea and theme. That they might be a bit intimidated and so, are acting out against it in response and that I should try understand that and do everything I can to reassure them that although it is breaking from the norm that it will, nonetheless, be a wonderful day! :-)
Re: What Do You Think Of This Idea??
weddings are such funny things in one way - they ignite such high expectations from EVERYONE, never mind the couple!
i think coogee hit the nail on the head about why your inlaws are acting up. if there is anything at all you could think of doing that would reassure them about your day (without compromising on your ideas, of course), then i'd be inclined to do it. after all, it would be very satisfying to hear afterwards that *everyone* (including your MIL ;-)) enjoyed your day and not just those who were orginally on your side. of course, you won't please everyone, but i think it'd make for a better day if everyone felt more relaxed about it in advance. and it might help to smooth over your differences with the inlaws - not saying you'll be best friends after it, but you might be able to accept eachother's differences a little better after it! seeing as afternoon tea is a concept many won't have come across before, maybe you could send your menu (or a brief description of it) out with the invitations? or could you provide details on the hotel down the road from your venue if people aren't familiar with it? or could you maybe put on a bus to ferry guests from the hotel to your venue & back, if it's in your budget? your plans sound unique and pretty and personal to the two of you, so hold tight to them, but try to bring others around to your way of thinking, and as difficult as it might be, try not let the whinging get to you. Re: What Do You Think Of This Idea??
Oh flor, that's such a good idea about sending out menu cards... :-) think I'll do that! It actually did occur to oh and myself that pil didn't actually know what afternoon tea was... just from what they were saying, it seemed that they were a bit out of the loop, so those are really good ideas/suggestions Florida, thanks! See, I think when they're all there that they will actually like it and won't spend the years following it bitching about it... at least I hope they will like it!!!!
