Would you consider being a stay-at-home wife?

Postby Mrs Summer » Mon Sep 19, 2022 3:05 pm

Im either hoping to go part time working 9-1 or working from home, doing accounts! We could afford to live off hubbies wages but i like my comfort and id like to give my children the best and i dont think i could do that if i gave up working completely!

When I have kids would love to be, but financially and all that probably won't happen. Would def consider part-time or job share. H2B says that I should give up when we are married and to be honest given half the chance I would. I hate my job and would love to be a lady of leisure

I have always planned to stay at home when the kids come along. I do think I will get bored to tears though, so I would consider working part-time to keep me entertained. But I do think it is important for the child’s development (the first 5 years) to have their mother or father there and believe that more parents should stay at home if they can financially.

Would LOVE To be a stay at home wife but only if I had children to keep me occupied, otherwise I'd go stir crazy. Wouldn't mind part time work but my company wouldn't give part time work so thats not an option.

Also hoping to manage that balance. I know it's a really hard decision, especially after lots of studying, making a career for yourself etc but what's the point in having kids just to hand them over to daycare or nanny?

My cousin is in exactly the same situation at the mo. Has 2, never sees them (tbh she doesn't mind this) and is thinking of no 3!!!!!

I (personally) get the feeling that kids are a bit of a status symbol/must have today?? Does anybody share this feeling or am I off my rocker???

Just wondered...I'll stop raving now...sorry

Sparkly and those other posters who said you were setting up home businesses...what type of business are you planning to set up?
I would love to work for myself, have lots of business and marketing experience but I have no ideas as to what I would do. Where did you get your inspiration from?

I became a stay at home mother in June. Was up to my eyes what with the wedding and everything, and then when we moved house the first month or two was really hard because I knew no one. But, thankfully, that's improved now. I am getting really busy now with various groups and classes, but not stressed out thank God. Really enjoying staying at home. I'll do it for a while and then maybe get a part time job or mind other children myself.

I think part time work can be a double edged sword, because you work part time, your husband might expect you to do all the housework, things to do with collecting children etc, and you could have even less time for yourself.

I would like to give up work for a few yrs if I had children, but I would be concerned about getting back into a job again. E.g. after 2 or 3 yrs out of work, you could have to take a more junior level position (with less money).

I think that when you work part time, it is very hard to get time to yourself. In order to get time to yourself you must depend on your husband to mind the child (ren). At least if you are at home all day, you might get a few hours to yourself while children are at school/playschool. If you are at work, at least you get the lunchbreak to yourself, to just sit and relax.

I would like to have one child, then wait until that child is near school age, before having a second. This would mean not having to pay 2 sets of childcare.

Yep- it's certainly our intention too. However, finances may be another matter....

We were just talking about this a couple of weeks ago and were saying have one, and give it 1-2 years attention and then another and be able to give it the same care and attention (and then maybe a third). Only problem is this would mean a 6+ year career break which might do your head in.

But I think it's deffo worth it if you can afford it. I remember my mam being at home all the time. Did anyone see that program about 2 weeks ago on dyslexia? They also went into some really interesting stuff about learning and developement- really interesting...

I am a stay at home mum since June also when i had my 3rd child. I am due back to work next month and there isn't a hope that i will be going back this time. The wages i get would only pay for child care so it is actually better for me to stay at home. My H2B does expect me to have some of the cleaning done but knows it just isn't possible some days. I would like to go back to work pt but not for a couple of years.

I'm a stay at home mum and i have to say i would give up my right arm to go back to work, but with h2b work hours its impossible, and there is no way we could afford to pay for child minding.

Dont no what il do after having another baby h2b tells me to give up as he is the main earner but I love the break too so well c

Hopefully whenever we do have children I would definately take the extra unpaid maternity leave and maybe just go back to work 3 days a week or perhaps work from home doing accounts etc. Thankfully we would be grand with hubbys income so I wouldnt be under pressure to work but I definatley love the interaction in work and the routine (control freak hates having no routine !! ) but also would hate to miss the early years of our babs lives !
