So I've bitten the bullet...

So I've bitten the bullet...

Postby Ellefun » Tue May 01, 2022 12:37 pm

and made an appointment to see my GP next Wednesday. I have taken the full day off as I don't know how I'll feel afterwards. I have been battling anxiety for too long now and need to concede I need help. I'm a creature of habit but now I realise that is part of mine attempt at managing things and self medicated, in a way. On days off if DH isn't around I'm loathed to leave the house, even for afew groceries. I need to take control as it's seriously effing me up and leading down an even darker road. I can't focus and have no motivation. The anxiety just leads me to not even try i.e supposed to be studying. I thought I was going to flip with nerves when I was going to a close friends Hen. It's draining the fun out of things and making me dread what is 'normal' for everyone else. I'm fraught with tension almost constantly...

Don't know why I'm posting... Maybe in the vain hope that now it's out there that I won't wuss out and cancel the GP appointment.

Brilliant, well done.

Just like a physical ailment, if you've a mental ailment it's best to see the doctor. If you leave it go, it'll only get worse.

Doctors help patients every day with things like this, stress, anxiety all of that. You won't be the first person through the door that day with the same complaint and you won't be the last. Take your time and explain exactly how you're feeling and the doctor will be able to help.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much for the words of support and encouragement.

It's (the anxiety) turning me into a ASShole at the moment. I couldn't accept this was happening to me. I found/find myself being cold with a friends girlfriend because she suffers so badly from it and cannot work outside the home. I know now it's because I fear that for myself. I don't want that for myself. No one does. I judged her I think.. because it was easier than realising I can't keep treading water anymore and avoiding every single stressor. We're not so dissimilar and that made me afraid.

good for you ellefun. DH suffers from aniexty and depression and went through hell for a long time until he got help and yes going to your GP is the first step. It took a while, there is no instant cure but after trying a few different things he now leads a complete life again ie driving on his own again, is back at work, is going out meeting friends etc. and is alot happier in himself. He still has aniexty from time to time but he can now deal with it. You OH should look at what he can do to help aswell as I was aparently doing the wrong thing but now I know what I should do it helps DH aswell! You will get there and it will be worth it so keep stong and go see your GP - it is definately the correct first step!

I was exactly the same up to a few weeks ago. I'd been having panic attacks since last november and it was totally destroying my life. I was terrified of going to work, terrified of going out, I wouldn't text or ring anyone and would spend the weekends pacing around the house. Life was just passing me by and I was totally exhausted from it. I went to the doc 3 weeks ago and she was brilliant. She has put me on meds for 6 weeks only, just to get me over the hump as she reckoned I was quite bad and needed a little help. I've also gone to two sessions of counselling/cognitive behaviourly therapy and will need about 6 of these. It took about two weeks for the meds to kick in but I feel like myself again, thank God.

It's an extremely brave thing to admit you need help and to also go and get it, so well done. There was a doctor on the John Murray show yesterday explaining all about panic attacks so I might be worth listening to it on the player.

Good luck and I know that you will get great relief even talking to the doctor.
