Formula Feeding....Support Thread

Re: Formula Feeding....Support Thread

I'm also looking for advice regarding the hungry baby formula. my baby is 7.5 wks old but he was 4.5 wks premature. his due date was 3 wks ago today - not sure if any of that makes a difference. anyway he drinks 6 oz a feed every 4/5 hrs round the clock. sometimes he'll look for more 30 mins/1 hr after feed & he'll take another 1-2 oz. should I move him to the hungrier baby formula?

Hi Buttercupbabe,

I have just noticed this thread and yours was the first post I saw. Haven't read any of the others posts on it yet :-8

Anyway..........just my tuppance worth. DS had terrible reflux as a baby and was always hungry as he brought so much of his food back up. I asked the midwife at the consultants about putting him on hungrier formula. He was 9lb 15oz so needed his food. She said that they never recommend the hungrier formula as they believe that it isn't good for the baby's kidneys so I certainly wouldnt give it to a premmie baby. She told me to just keep uping the amount of formula until he seemed satisfied.

To everyone else......hi........I look forward to reading the thread. I breastfeed DS for 3 weeks and it was a disaster. Had to put him on formula on the advise of the doc after 3 weeks because he was a lb below his birth weight. Dont think I can go through that again especially with a 22 month old to care for too. Hoping to be BF the colostrum and then go onto formula. :wv

Ive just noticed this thread too!

Buttercup that isnt really a lot - i would say maybe if he was taking the full bottle (9oz) every 2-3 hours but he's going 4/5 hours on less?, at that age my dd was taking 5-6oz every 3 hours. Maybe check with your gp as im sure the fact that he was premature will come into it.

Does anyone know can you keep them on the aptimil comfort long term? DD is on it about 7 weeks now. She had a lot of reflux when she was born, it went when i put her on the comfort & dr browns bottle but the last week she is spueing up again after nearly every feed.

I can't get the milk to come out of the bottle? I went & bought no 3 teeth last night & still nothing?? Can anyone advise me on what teeth to get?? I use advent bottles!
ThanksR

Me again!!! So I figured out the teeth for the C&G comfort but I don't think he likes it, still struggling on bottles.... Anybody no if I can give both... Like give normal C&G for one or two bottles a day?? I tried ringing their helpline but they don't open Saturday's. I just don't no what to do for my little fella? He is still drinking very little, might get around 5 oz's in every 4 hours & he's 10 weeks old now! Sometimes only 4 oz's. I can tell its the reflux now but just don't think it's doing much for him. I have said this to so many people & jut not getting much help! The PHN just gets me to bring him back everyweek to be weighed. He is purting on weight but not as much as they would like. I brought him to a&e a few weeks ago & was told.... Oh yea that's just reflux, ah your a first time mother just go home & rest!!!! It didnt register how patronising he was until I was on way home cos I was just glad to here he was ok. Hope one of you ladies can offer me some advice please?? God this motherhood is so hard (but amazing) :)
Thanks

Sorry, I can't really offer advice but just wanted to say my little fella was 10 wks on wed. We give him 6oz every 4 hrs, 5 feeds in the day but he doesn't always finish them. He's on Aptamil first milk & we use nuk teat. Had alot of feeding problems to start with. He ended up in ICU for 8 days as he just wouldn't feed & lost weight. Had tried Avent & tommee tippee bottles & teat but he didn't like them. Thankfully as soon as we started using nuk teat he fed well & is flying now. The nuk teat fit the avent bottles & you can get them in dunnes. As I said though, he doesn't always take the 6oz. Probably one feed a day he'll only drink half his bottle

At least your little fella is gaining weight

Buttercup babe thank you, so nice to hear that your little man is taking similar amount to mine! It's just so hard to tell if he is getting enough! My mam just told me to give him one bottle of the normal C&G because it would kinda be like weaning so going to try that! I think it's already helping with the poo cos he did one last night without any struggle, thank god. Sorry your little man was sick but great to hear he is doing better!

My little lady got v constipaed on normal C&G so we switched to C&G comfort. She is only 12 days old and after 2 days of constant crying and no poos we took her to doc who gave us some babylax and it worked. My Q is how long des it take for a babies bowels movements to start happening again. Babs had a poo yesterday lunch time after the babylax but nothing since, i hvae been trying to give her some water in between feeds. I'm paranoid now that the issue hasn't been sorted, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi bobbir,

My ds also struggles a bit to poo & he only seems to go every 2 or 3 days which I was really worried about but I have been told that that is ok unless the poo is hard which means he is constipated. I was told about this saying - 1 in 7 & 7 in 1..... Nurse said this means they can do 1 poo in 7 days or 7 poos in 1 day which is ok!! Hope that is some help to you

I changed my lo teat this week. I hadn't a clue!! He was 12 wks this wk & on same teat from start. He started really messing with bottle, pushing it in & out with tongue, arms & legs flailing everywhere & sliding down my lap. I thought he was trying to get away from bottle or teething :duh: someone recommended I try a different teat so went for avent 3. He was much happier drinking but there was also milk flowing down his chin so tried avent 2 & it's perfect. Feel like I'm telling goldilocks story!! :yelrotflmaosmilie:

I guess we live & learn

Thanks Buttercupbabe! Like so many things I guess it's just a case of following LO's lead and playing it by ear. DS is 12 weeks now and seems happy on the no.1 teat. I have a couple of no.2's in the cupboard for the day he decides he's not. He's used to working a bit for his milk anyway as he is breastfed so I'm probably best to stay on the no.1's for now until he starts objecting.

Ladies....... looking for advice again. I now have my 14 week old DS almost fully weaned to formula. However I have no idea if I'm giving him too many feeds or not. I am making up 6oz bottles and he is feeding roughly every 3 hours. He doesn't always finish the bottle - usually drinks 4 or 5 oz. A typical day would start with a BF at 6am then FF at 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm and 9pm. He will usually wake for BF again at 1am and 3 or 4am. So that's 5 bottles and 2 or 3 BF in 24 hours.

What should a 3-month-old be on at this stage? I would have thought 5 bottles a day of 6 to 7oz and that I could knock the night feeds on the head. I have tried a few times to kill the night feed with the dodi or bottles of water but he's having none of it. And he won't take a bigger bottle for me. I can't really stretch him for longer than 3 hours without having to listen to an hour of crying. I really don't know what is normal or how I am doing here...... help please!

Hi Delphinium, I dont know if this will be of any help to you but i BF for the first 8 weeks - had to wean my LO off over night as I was on strong antibiotics anyway the first couple of weeks I didnt know what I should be giving her so I fed her 4 or 5 oz bottles on demand, she is now 15 weeks old and is in a routine where she gets 5 7oz bottles a day so 35oz - 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm and 8.30pm, she sleeps through the night so Im guessing she is fairly content with this but for how long i don't know - tis all trial and error if you ask me!

Here's my q now - when do they start getting solids, she's a fairly big baby but seems ok at the moment, some say 16 weeks others say 6 months - what do ye think??
