Xmas pressie for autistic little boy age 4

Postby Missus Lippy » Fri Oct 10, 2021 12:44 pm

Hi all :wv

I am completely new to this forum but looking for some help on inspiration for a Xmas present for a boy age 4 who suffers from autism. He is attending a school and they are trying to bring him on with the picture cards etc and he is starting to talk. What I am wondering is, are there any websites or somewhere like the Early Learning Centre that cater for children like him. I feel he would get benefit out of something that would co-incide with whatever he is doing at school. Any time I see him, he seems to love DVD's but can take or leave other toys.

Not meaning to be offensive with any of the above, maybe I am raving and totally on the wrong track :-8

Mr Potatoe head is a great toy for any child but particularly for a child with autism as it will help with fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

All of the cause and effect toys work great with autistic kids, the ones that make a noise or light up when you press a button or pull a string etc. A lot of autistic kids have favourite colours as well which you could tie in.

If you do a google search for education catalogues, and particulary speech and language equipment you might get some nice ideas.
Are you looking for something that he can play with by himself (maybe look at simple computer games for early reading skills) or something that an adult or older sibling will play with too?
Even in the mainstream children stores you will find a few good ideas - very simple matching games can be fun.
Have you thought about toys that are more sensory, rather than intellectual iykwim? Tactile toys, particulary ones with a simple cause and effect (ie you squeeze it and a light flashes or it makes a noise) can be a big hit - you can spend lots on these in catalogues but you can also find some great ones in the poundshop. Anything rubbery, stretchy, furry, squidgy can be great fun. In a similar vein, do you know those lava-lamp-like lamps (sorry!) that have some kind of electical light effect so that when you touch them, all the streams of light are directed at your finger?? I'm not explaining them well, but if you ask in the Gadget Shop they'll probably know what I mean. If you could find a sturdy one that could be really fascinating.
V-tech do a range of computer games for very young kids that are easy to follow and teach simple number/colour/ shape lessons, and there are lots of interactive books that could be nice if he's just starting on books.
A really big hit could be a speech therapy puppet (they have moveable mouths, tongues and fingers) and if someone older is going to play with him, it can really stimulate interest in toys to find that there is this one that sticks out its tongue, tickles him and can mirror his actions or follow instructions!

Hope there is something in all that, that helps!

Have you had a look at http://www.offwego.ie. It has books written by an Irish mum to help prepare her own diabled son for events like going swimming or to a restaurant.

Our disabled son found these books extremely good, not only did they help prepare him for the events, but he loves just reading through them as well and talking about the pictures in them. Our son does not have autism but there is a very good review on one of the Autism sites Shine Ireland for them (link to the review is at the bottom of the shine ireland homepage http://www.shineireland.com ).

I would think the books would work well with the picture cards they are using at school with your little boy.
