Hedge advice

Hedge advice

Hi, I need to replace our hedge that died last winter. I have visited the local garden centres, all recommeding planting laurel, but the hubby not keen on it.Other recommeded ones have been red robin, green & golden privet. I have no option but to plant a hedge to give privacy between neighbour. We renovated our house recently & have gone for a modern look. Would any of these look ok.

Laurel hedging is so so ugly don't plant it. I really like native hedging, check your local county council here is link for westmeath co re native hedging and it lists some of the native hedging plants http://www.westmeathcoco.ie/en/media/westmeathhedges.pdf

We had the same problem, I am not a fan of Laurel either plus it grows like crazy... needs a lot of pruning but there are other varieties of Laurel which are just as hardy but prettier - have a look at Portugese Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) or Italian Laurel... not as vigourous growth and prettier in my opinion. Also beech is another option if you don't mind the leaves turning brown in the winter.

we just got golden privet, it is supposed to be easier to prune and I like the colour (personnally) laurel is supposed to be harder to prune after a few years. I also wanted an everygreen so was more limited but if you are not bothered then there are more options. Did the garden centre show you those hedges and if so did you like them? Red robin is quite nice too but it's a complete personnal opion - some people might like it but others don't like the laurel hedge!!!

I've just planted a red robin hedge and I think it's lovely as the red tops of the bushes against the green bases add a real splash of colour. Not sure if it's as fast growing as the laurel but from pictures I've seen they can make a reasonably big hedge once fully grown.

we have escallonia hedge which is an evergreen & has lovely pink flowers at this time of year. It's fairly fast growing initally & we are trying to bulk it out to make it a good hedge. It's great in the wilds of Donegal anyway.

Check out the Griselinia hedging too. My mam has this planted to hide her tunnel/washing line down the garden and there's very little maintenance on it. Stays green all year round and grows quite quickly too so it won't take long to thicken out and give you the privacy you want. Also has a lovely vibrant green waxy leaf!

Thanks for all the replies. The garden centres in my areas are very small & only have one or two types of hedging available. Hopefully I will travel to a larger one this weekend in another town & getter a better idea. I didnt know there were different types of laurel & forgot about beech. I wont try Grisilenia again, after it died in me. Thanks for info again.
