Words you have an illogical aversion to

Words you have an illogical aversion to

Postby StupidSexyFlanders » Wed May 02, 2022 1:26 pm

I just had to order a tiered letter tray for my office and I needed to order a large one for the bottom tier - advertised as a "jumbo" tray. The word "jumbo", for some reason, makes my skin crawl.

Anyone else have any seemingly innocuous words that set their teeth on edge?

I hate hate HATE when people use the words "groovy" or "funky" to describe anything other than music, eg: "oh your new top is really funky!" GAAAAAAH. It makes my skin crawl. Please stop the madness! Or when people stick the word "gate" at the end of something that could be described as scandalalous. It was the Watergate scandal, not Watergate-gate. That just gives me rage more than anything though!

Edit: I also hate when people refer to their partner as "himself" or "herself". That's probably going to offend some people but I just think it's GROSS. You're talking about someone you're in love with in the third person? Ugh to you.

Oh massive plus 1 on that! My mum says it and thinks she's being really cool and I just want to turn my face inside out I'm dying so much. She also refers to good-looking men as "hunky"... KILL ME NOW!

I also despise the word "pop".

As a verb - "I'm going to pop it in the fridge" - NO!

As a noun - "I bought a bottle of pop." - NO!

As a nickname - "We call our grandfather "Pop"" - NOOOOOOOOO!

When things are named something stupid on a menu.

Went to this place one time where the chocolate cake was called 'Chocco Lumpy Bumpy'. I really really REALLY wanted it cos it looked gorgeous coming out to the table next to ours, but I was damned if I was going to ask for Chocco Lumpy Bumpy. I'm a 33 year old woman for crying out loud.

I also dislike the new craze for calling things 'amazeballs'.

+ 100 gazillion! Very irritating. Also, people saying BOOM when they're happy about something... "got tickets to the d-bag concert! BOOM!", oh yeah? Well, I wish you would actually explode.

I'm with you on fiancé - I hated having to say that word. Thank god we were only engaged for a year.

Hubby too, ugh! I hate any words that people stick a y or ie on the end; brekkie, horsie, doggie, biccie. Especially biccie, it makes my skin crawl. Except for Mammy, I like Mammy.

I hate the word frog - it makes me sick. I never use it, ever. It's so English and weird sounding in my mouth. ANd that sound even weirder, frog in my mouth. Yuck.

Basically; overused, especially by D4 heads.
