Using serious corporal punishment on children

This would be the only case where I could possibly see myself giving DD a slap to give her a fright. My MIL (the most gentlest woman ever) was minding a neighbours child one day and they were out in the garden playing etc and he made a run for the gate and the road, she said she got such a fright that she did give him a slap out of pure fright. He never did it again.

I don't agree with little slaps here and there for minor things as I just don't think it is effective and is not a good lesson to teach a child that violence (even if only a little slap) is an acceptable reaction to someone doing something wrong.

How could anyone in this day age actually think that it is okay to hit a child with a belt. That has got to be child abuse and that man is a bully. Please someone tell me that it would be considered a criminal offence?? Surely parents do not have the right to do this to their children.

If the only way you can control your child is by beating them with a belt, you're doing a sugar job as a parent.

Even if the child is completely wild and out of control, which can happen to the best of parents, beating them with a belt is never acceptable.

All you're doing is taking your own anger out on someone weaker than you who is at your mercy. It says a lot about you as a person and you shouldn't be allowed to be in charge of kids.

The smacking debate will always be out there, but I think we are all in agreement that hitting a 13 year old with a belt is wrong. I hope his details have been passed to Gardaí and the HSE. We were slapped around a good bit by my Mam as kids, my brother especially, he was a handfull to say the least! It didn't do any favours for his relationship with my parents, and I say parents coz my father did nothing to stop it so he's had a part to play too IMO. Now, I'm not a perfect parent either. We have smacked our son once or twice, but never to cause him pain. Time out or "Thinking Time" as his creche calls it is much more effective!
