Birth Stories

I know! It's mental! The midwives were saying I should go for a home birth the next time and I would actually consider it after that! It was so bloody worrying wondering if I'd make it in on time. All's well that ends well though - it was great to have it over with so quickly!

Hi ladies,

it doesn't seem so long since I was typing up DD1's birth story, but here I am again!

DD2 was due on April 7th. DD1 had arrived at 39 weeks and I was really surprised, so although I was trying not to expect my second to be early too, I was prepared for it. But 39 and then 40 weeks came and went with not a sign of anything happening. On the Easter Monday I decided we'd head up to Dundrum to do some shopping and walking around. Felt fine all day and then that night I started to have a few pains. My contractions first time had been very pronounced and started in my back - this time they started like period cramps and then wrapped around into my back. They weren't too strong yet, so I didn't even mention it to DH. Went to bed and managed to sleep, though was woken quite a bit by the pain.

They were coming about every 15 minutes by the time I got up on the 10th and I told DH it was probably going to be the day, so he stayed home from work. Got DD off to creche and had a pretty quiet morning, sitting on the yoga ball and breathing through the contractions, which were getting stronger, but were no closer together than 8 minutes by lunchtime. I had my TENS machine on and was using yoga breathing techniques to get through them, but they were pretty strong. I called the hospital and they said while I could come in any time, I'd be fine to stay at home until they were every 3-4 minutes too.

At some point I got up to go the toilet and suddenly they got much closer together - they were very strong when standing and eased off when I sat down, but were every 3 minutes, so I knew it was time to head in. DH called my sister to drop us in and as I was getting ready they were becoming so intense that I started to worry I'd left it too late. But sitting down in the car again they were more manageable and we made it in. I had to brace myself to get up out of the car, and while I was sitting there someone came out to ask if I needed a wheelchair. I remember on DD I couldn't sit down at that point but this time sitting was more bearable than standing, so they sent someone out with a chair and we headed in.

After admissions we went straight to the delivery room and even while I was telling the midwife the contractions were every 3 minutes, it was clear they were coming faster than that. I'd had no show and my waters were still intact at this stage, but she examined me and told me I was 4cm (though her notes later said 3cm - maybe she was trying to be encouraging :) ). She offered to break my waters, but I said no as things were moving pretty fast already.

Once the trace was set up I was able to sit on the yoga ball, which was much more comfortable than lying on the bed. At this point my leggings and boots had been removed, but I was still in my socks and my Isabella Oliver dress - I just didn't have the energy to change into the cheapy nightie I'd got for delivery :) I laboured on the ball using the TENS and gas and air (this had absolutely no effect on me last time, but did help a bit this time) and squeezing DH's hand through each contraction. I managed to make each one a bit more bearable by counting through the waves of pain - once I reached 3 or 4 each time I knew I'd hit the peak and could count my way out of it, which was also a help.

I was on the ball about an hour and to be honest I was really aware of the baby moving down the whole way and knew exactly when I hit 10cm. The midwife knew too and as soon as I hit that point she had me climb up on the bed on my knees, leaning up on the back of the bed. Again, this was a position I tried on DD1 and just couldn't manage - it's funny how different this labour was. I knew the baby was right there, though crowning was nowhere near as painful as it was first time. The midwife broke my waters at that point and since I'd had a 3rd degree tear on DD1, she wanted to be careful with pushing to minimise the risk of tearing badly again. She dribbled warm water on my perineum to help it stretch and I gave one big push, followed by holding while she helped the head out and then not even one full push later the baby flew out. I pushed for 35 minutes on DD1, which I know was not bad for a first baby, but 3 minutes of pushing by comparison was amazing!

We hadn't found out the gender, so the midwife held her up to show me we had another little girl and then I whipped my clothes off (the Isabella Oliver dress barely got any mess on it and washed like new ;o) ) and she passed her to me through my legs to hold for a moment, before helping me to turn around and lie down with her. We were able to let the cord finish pulsing before cutting it, which wasn't the case last time due to low iron count and blood loss and it was so lovely to lie there snuggling with the baby for a while.

The midwife brought some lovely tea and toast and then I got to feed DD. Again this was so different from my first delivery - due to the 3rd degree tear, I had to go to theatre after 15 minutes and didn't see her for 4 hours. It was lovely to stay with the baby and for her to be able to latch on and feed right away. I did have a slight 2nd degree tear along the scar tissue from the first as the baby came out with her hand by her face (DD1 had her elbow up - they both love to flail their arms about it seems!), but the midwife stitched it up in the delivery room and it was no big deal.

I was able to shower after that and was then brought down to the ward. I did Domino, but since baby was born at 5:21pm, it would have been too late to be released the same day, so we stayed one night.

I'm so delighted with how it all went and with my little angel, who is the easiest baby ever so far (touch wood!). I know that was a bit of an essay, but thanks for reading if you got this far and best of luck if you have the delivery ahead of you :)

Heres mine while i have 5 minutes!

Was booked in to be induced on wednesday at 39 weeks & 2 days. Got up at 630 am as had to be in for 730am. Making my brekkie i started getting feelings jn thighs and botom of bump. Started timing them and they were a 1.5 min apart. Dh got up and mil came to mind ds. So said our goodbyes and said to mil dont think i will need induction.

Pains got worse but were between 1.5 and 2 min apart. Got into admissions amd put on trace, contractions got worse but more irregular. Got admitted at 830 and brought up o ward then at 9. Pains were getting bad then. Got birthing ball bit it didnt help. Midwofe checked me and i was 2 cm only. So she siad i could grt pethadine. By the time ahe went for it and another midwife came in with her, it was 30 min and pains were on top of each other so she said they would check if beds available in labour ward so i didnt get the pethadine as they took me immediately. Within 30 min of being examined at 2 cm in nornal ward i was in labour ward and examined then and at 4 cm. Got gas and air but wanted epidural as the intensity was unreal and it was all happening too fast. Got epi at 11.02 am. It worked within 15 min so i was happy to chill out for a while.

At 12 mid day the midwife examined me and i was 10 cm so she said we would wait an hour. Dh went to shop for a sandwich and i told him not to be long as i didnt think i would wait the hour as i could feel pressure. He was a
Back within 5 min and i had awful pressure so at 1235 i started
Pushing. At 12.43 our beautiful princess arrived into this world at 7lb 6. To say we were stunned was an understatement as we werw both convinces it was going to be a boy.

I started breastfeeding her straightaway and she went blue as she was very mucusy so a paed docor was called but she came around straight away and was fine. I had a lot of stitches as she was op and tore me to bits!

Back to the ward and was sitting up eating my tea a few hours later and i started to bleed heavily, doctors and midwifes came straight away and i was put on a drip. I bled again later on in the night but they manages to stop it. It was scary at the time as there was talk of having to o back to theatre to be restitched but thankfully i disnt have to go and am fine now again.

So we are heading home tomorrow, could have gone today but am so tired from the blood loss decidednto stay the 3 nights.

Sorry if i scared anyone! But i will say this was my 2nd time going public in Limerick and have nothimg but great praise for them. Everything that happened to me i had the perfect attention within seconds of anything going wrong.

Well done if you got this far!

Just read your story and realised we could have ended up on the same ward afterwards since we both delivered on the 10th :) Don't think we did though! Congrats to you too and also justwed09 - glad it all turned out well for you in the end!

I am so late in posting my story, I can't believe I'm actually writing up my own story after reading so many here!!! I've just been completely wrapped up with our beautiful DS. Hes our first child and here's how he made his entrance to the world - its a bit of an essay!!
I had an ANC at 39+2 which I was very hopeful would be my last. I had been getting niggly AF type pains all weekend and the ANC was on the Monday. The doc said he'd check me over but wouldn't give me a sweep, he said I was almost fully effaced and 1cm dilated and he expected me to go that night or the next day! He got my hopes up, and then nothing happened! :( My due date came around and my mum said to make plans to do something with DH so we made dinner reservations in our fave place. That afternoon the pains went into my back but I thought nothing of it, only when it came time to get ready for the meal I noticed the pains were bout 15 mins apart and kept coming! I mentioned it to DH who said he had a fear of my waters breaking at the restaurant so we cancelled just in case and said we'd get takeaway from a local chippie instead. In the car the pains got noticeably stronger and were between 7-9 mins apart. Still I told DH I wanted my food!! Ha! Got the food and said we'd eat it in my FILs house as it was nearer than ours so when we got there (not even 5 mins away!) pains were 5 mins apart. At this stage I think I went into denial! I sat at the kitchen table picking at my food, DH and FIL nervously laughing at me, getting me cushions to sit on and both of them rubbing my back through the cnx! Then I remembered something a friend had told me only earlier that week - if I wanted to check if my cnx were real or false take a hot hot hot shower so my DH got one ready for me, got in and BAM! Cnx were 1.5 - 2 mins apart, some lasting 1.5 mins so they were right on top of each other. Got out of the shower, got in the car and were in the labour ward within 15 mins. Brought me straight down, hooked up the trace and said it seemed like baby was almost here as I was having full blown cnx with no break. Gave me an internal and looked at me with a fairly shocked face and told me I was only slightly past 1cm!!!! I was so disheartened! Got using my TENS which really helped and sat on the birthing ball which was great! They checked again 2 hours later and I was 4cm, moving along thankfully but I was so tired. Cnx still on top of one another! They asked if they could break my waters and I said no for fear of the increased pain so I asked for the epidural. They said it would slow it down so I should keep going and we'd "revisit" the topic later!! An hour later I was 6 and forcefully asked for the epi, I was shattered and really thought Id be too tired to push. They got the epi for me and with 15 mins of my last internal I was painfree although they only gave me a small dose so Id still feed the pressure as I was adamant that I didn't want an episiotomy unless it was extremely necessary and I knew the more feeling I had down there the less likely the chance of needing one! Then my waters went just after the anesthetist left so they examined me again - I was 9, almost 10! Heart breaking after getting so far on just my TENS! But they let me rest for 2 hours and then the epi began to wear off so I started to feel all the pains which was great for the pushing, not so great cause there really was no break between them now! After an hour and a half of pushing the MW rang for a doc to come assist me. The doc arrived into the room 5 mins later just as my son was crowning!! The thought of the suction must've scared him out! One more push and he was out, DH cut the cord which I really didn't think he would do but honestly my DH was just amazing throughout! The MW put him straight up onto my chest :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat: and he didn't even make a sound until they took him away to be weighed. He was 6lb 14oz and just perfect!! DH fed our son his first feed as I had opted to bottle feed. The doctor who has came to assist stitched me up as I had gotten slightly torn due to my son having his hand by his face and his cord was wrapped around both his neck and his hand keeping the hand by his face for the delivery. It was the smallest tear and I was up and walking around within an hour however the MWs weren't too keen on me to be walking so soon after having the epidural!
All told my labour including waiting to push for those 2 hours was just over 8 hours which I think is fantastic for a first time labour! I had such an amazing experience, writing this down makes me want to do it all over again!!!! :heartbeat: :heartbeat: :heartbeat:
