Gestational Diabetes, anyone else?

Re: Gestational Diabetes, anyone else?

Hiya all,

Was diagnoised with GD at 28 weeks, very pissed off more so at the fact that i was semi private with the coombe and had just paid €750 consultation fees for being semi private. Was told i would be with the diabetic clinic until babs is born (only reason i went semi private was because i didn't want to que, don't care when i have babs, whether i'm in a room with 6 or 60 women - just didn't want to que)My first visit to the diabetic clinic, was waiting for nearly 5 hours because apparently if you are public, semi private or private, there is only one clinic. The doctor in the diabetic clinic did say to me that they have lowered the blood sugar levels so there has been an influx of pregnant women who now have GD who wouldn't neccessarily have had it before.

I did ring the accounts department in coombe and they will be sending me out a refund cheque because i am attending a public clinic. So not all bad.

I'm managing my sugars through diet alone, 1st test, bloods where 11.9 (should have been 10 or below) 2nd set of bloods where 7.5 (should have been below 7) and last set of bloods where 5.3 (anything below 5.5) so docs are happy with me alothough they said that my baby is very big, i'm 34 weeks and they said i'm measuring at 37 - nothing has been mentioned about induction but is it possible they have the size of the baby wrong because i'm looking at my bump and am not all that big!!

Hi Guber

You haven't too long more to go until babs arrives. God 5 hours was a long time to wait to be seen. I was at the diabetic clinic today and there was a lot of pregnant women there as well. That's great that you are getting a refund.

Well my visit at the clinic went well today. Levels were fine and so was urine thank God. App was at 2 and I was out of there at 3.30. We have growth scan on Tues looking forward to that, diabetic nurse thinks I am having a normal size baby as I am not massive (took this as a compliment :o0 )

Been diagnosed with gestational diabetes last Thursday in the coombe

This is the first time in the 3 pregnancies. Am 5.1 fasting bloods.

Met dietician on Friday. She told me I can have absolutely no chocolate, cream, ice-cream, jam, sugar, white bread.

It is going to be a long 12 weeks

Suggestions for food welcome.

God Whacky woman you were just over by .1

I have 4 weeks left please God and they cant come fast enough really finding the last stretch hard.

Food wise, it may take a couple of weeks to adjust to what suits you and what doesn't. I buy brown or wholemeal everything and then all fresh fish, meat and veg.

I do have a treat in the chinese and last week it was meat sung which was yummy or I would have a chow mein. I am not sweet toothed so being off the choc and sweets etc hasnt bothered me. I find I can eat crisps and they agree with my levels.

Hi All

I had gd on my last pregnancy. attended Holles St, who were brilliant and going there again this time. They don't retest for it on subsequent pregnancies and just make you attend the diabetic clinic anyway. Mine was really well controlled last time, so I hope it will be the same again this time as could do without too many hospital visits. Just wondering if anyone else here in my situation, attending HS on a subsequent pregnancy and how did it work out or how often did you have to attend. I think I would rather go through regular glucose challenge tests to check for it to be honest but they don't work that way.

Hi Justwed09

Its not all about the salads and fish you will find foods that suit you from testing your bloods after meals. It may take a couple of weeks to get used to but your lucky that its only for 9 weeks, I was diagnosed at week 14 O:| I found I could not eat cereals in the morning, was eating the ones recommended but my levels used to be very high, when I said this to the nurse she said some women can take them others can't. I googled diabetic recipes for scones and other recipes and they worked a treat just felt I wasn't being deprived.

The information talk is grand they just go through foods you can and can't eat, they give you the pack and show you how to test yourself. You do a quiz as well to test how much knowledge you have about diabetes.

I don't think it has anything to do with weight anymore, it can be hereditary as well plus they have lowered the levels so a lot more women are being treated for it. I had to attend the diabetic clinic in the regional as 2 of my levels were slightly raised at the start and there was hardly any overweight people there I was quite surprised as they really blame weight for this condition.

I am being induced tomorrow evening as they don't let you go over your due date when you have the GD. I was told that they don't let you go over 39 weeks and that is what I will be on Friday. Have to check myself for 6 weeks after babs arrives but only twice a day and the levels seem to be higher than what I am allowed to have them at now. Then at the 6 weeks check up with GP I will need to be tested to see if I have diabetes or not.

Good luck for the next 9 weeks.

Hi girls. I have officially jumped on board with the diabetes diet. Had it on DS so will be treated as if I have it this time as well. Went to the education day this week and the dietician was saying no more than 50g of cooked rice. I did rice this evening and was weighing it out and 50g could hardly be seen on the plate. I had 95g in the end and my levels were fine an hour later. Just wondering if anyone can give me guidelines on how many grams of cooked rice and pasta we can eat or is it really just such a tiny amount? Thanks in advance.

My bloods have all beeen fine so far. Attending the clinic once a month for now to check them. Checking at home 3 times a day mostly and they are mostly fine. Not keeping strictly to the diet though. Find it hard to stick to all through the pregnancy. Last time it was only for 5-6 weeks so it was easy enough to keep to.
