Hi Pippa

I'm in Clondalkin too. Where abouts in Clondalkin are you?

We were the first ones to see the house when it came onto the market and it was top end of our budget at the time. Like yourself, saved very hard and had almost 32K - the bank practically fell over themselves to give us the mortgage. The sellers were looking for a quick sale so we went straight in with the asking price - still had to pay nearly 7k in stamp duty though way back when you had to pay it for anything for 190K. But it was worth it. At the end of the day think we were in the right place at the right time. Cost was 207K and we bought in August 02 (didn't move into until March 03). Borrowed 90% from the bank and at the moment are fixed for a few years - works out around 780 per month incl mortgage protection.

My little brother has just moved into his house and paid 280K for it. Much smaller than mine and needs a lot more work. Prices are just crazy.

Sorry if this sounds rude... its honestly not meant to be...

But am I missing something? Is there a huge bill coming in that I do not know about?

Me & H2B take home in or about the average on this poll. With paying out everything we still save about 500 per week, and can not see where we can spend too anything more. Yes thats living in Dublin. (With our rent about as much as some of the mortgages quoted here)

Neither of us are smokers... We both enjoy social drinks and eat out as often as we want. We also go away about once or twice a month for a weekend in the country. And I go to a beautician & hairdresser about once a month. Basically we do not go without whatever either of us want.

So basically we do not budget to save each week - it just happens that we dont spend it.

Are we missing something. Should we be worried when we get a mortgage (that comes in at the same price as our rent) that there will be a huge bill coming in for things that we don't know about yet?

Sorry to ask... but I am concerned that I am missing something? Or maybe I am missing out on something that I should be having.

We are also in Dublin with a mortgage under 900pm.
I think the bills do add up a bit more when you have a house Jessica because you are often buying stuff for it that you wouldn't with a rented plce. Especially for the first few years.

We're in dublin, with a mortgage of under €900 per month, so it can be done.
We would be in the bottom end of the poll - with both of us earning under the national average.
I don't drink or smoke - h2b likes a drink every now and again, but our only vice is little miss who gets an inordinate amount of money spent on her, and of course our addiction to chocolate. Still manage to save about 25% of our net salaries every month so we don't do that badly.

That sounds good! Whereabouts did you buy??

Clondalkin. It was valued at 240k, we had saved 25k ( a lo-hot of hard work that was) so we got 215k from the bank, repayable over 30 years. That gives us a grand total of 873 a month.

Sounds great. Clondalkin is really coming on as an area (I dont mean that in a patronising way either), it has some excellent road links and is so close to both the N4, N7 & M50. Plus the new outer ring road will be excellent when it's finished.

We have an average salary and a big mortgage (over 1400 a month). We also have two car loans, a wedding loan, two mobiles, usual utility bills, refuse charges, parking charges (one of us) and credit cards. H2B also pays a massive maintenance every month to support his ex wife and kids.

We do find it tight but don't eat out much, or drink much (odd bottle of wine at home) and just about manage a holiday every year, a good Chriatmas and I save 100 a week, plus 50 a week on SSIA.

But then, we choose to live in a reasonably expensive part of Cork, we choose to spend our money on my house and the kids. Without the maintenace, we'd be laughing but there is no point in dwelling on it, the kids need it.

In a few years, we hope to have cleared the cards, the wedding loan, SSIA will mature and the house is almost done the way I want. It's hard now but will get easier - if they didn't keep giving ESB, VHI and Bord Gais huge rises!!!!!!!!

Hi all,
Am really surprised at this, like most of you out there must be earning over 50K a year! Think I am def in the wrong job!! Ah well I'm happy in it I supposed! I had thought the average for a couple take home pay would have been between 1,000 and 1,500!!

To be honest, I can't wait to get out of the place. I've lived there my whole life and the reason I bought there was for the sake of my son. I didn't want to have to change his school and his friends (the two of us lived with my mother until he was 4).

But I'm becoming increasingly frustrated at the endless apartment building and the big imposing way every new building is designed now (walking down the street it almost feels like they're lurking over you). The traffic is a chore every morning and I can only see it getting worse when all those apartments are occupied. And the village is completely paved - not a tree in sight. I do love my greenery.

Once the kids are old enough to fend for themselves, I'll be rethinking the situation.

I noticed there were a lot of apt blocks going up alright, but is'nt that the same everywhere in Dublin??? I went to the Square the same day and that is even worse - talk about a metropolis..with the possible exception of Dalkey/Howth etc..I think everywhere is getting overrun with apts.

Whereabouts is Clondalkin are you dya mind me asking? I rented on Boot rd a for a while a few years ago

well, you're all loaded if you can manage to save in this day and age

We take home about €4k, mortgage and loans (for furniture, floors, tiles etc.) is about €1600, €300 on car loan, €200 for petrol, €100 on mobile phones and a couple of hundred off the credit cards. not to mention the utilities. We couldn't afford to go away this year with the expense of the apartment.

I'd love to be able to save something each month but we just can't afford it unfortunately at the moment.

Yeah totallyshocked!!

I'm with you on that I have no mortgage or rent at the mo and am finding it really hard to save!! Have just cleared my car loan so that will now be going towards the wedding.H2B is paying mortgage but only 440 per month so not too bad!
Basically myself and H2B live the good life we go out bout 2/3 times a week and that really sucks the money up, really need to cut back for the next year. have swore that I won't borrow for the wedding!!
Probably didn't help that i went on a savage shopping spree at the weekend, but don't do that too often!!
