Oct05B2B

I live in the west.

I bought my house 5 yrs ago, when prices were cheaper. Houses were still dear then. Eg. the house was 100K punts, but I was earning 18K punts.

H2B and I hope to build a house on a site at home. Between paying something for the site and building the house, we are hoping to keep the mortgage repayments to under 1000 Euro a month.

I can understand that houses are very expensive in Dublin, but it is all relative. There are more jobs in Dublin, but decent jobs can be hard to come by, near where I live. Therefore it is harder to change jobs, and get more money.

hi bridget
i'm not having a go at you!
all i was saying was that you said that most mortgages are between 500-900 euro - that is definitely not the case in Dublin.

lucky you!!!

Great to spark off bit of a debate, but basically you can have a mortgage for as much or as little as you want, depending on how long you want to pay it back for!!

At the mo H2B is paying mortgage on our furture home paying 440 a month but this will go up as we also have to take out a further 100,000 to do renovations -aahhh!! so that nice little 440 will be increased!!

I knew you were just asking the question Oct05B2B. :)

Mortgages are cheaper outside of Dublin, but jobs are not as plentiful either.

I set mine up for 25 yrs, as I was single at the time. Some banks wouldn't give 25 yr loans. I know that the banks will give 30 yr loans now to people (there is an age restriction) This all makes the repayments more manageable.

to be honest i'd be tempted to move out of dublin soon as it's so expensive

both of us earn good salaries but it all disappears as soon as it comes in to our accounts each month on the mortgage and general cost of living here

Sorry - I have to disagree with the notion that mortgages are always automatically cheaper once you are outside Dublin. In some cases this is true, however many major cities/towns are also very expensive to live in - example ANYWHERE around Galway - v.expensive, Cork can be the same in a lot of areas, Kinslae, West Cork - Kerry - Killarney is as expensive if not more so than Dublin. etc. etc.... there are plenty more examples as I'm sure people will agree.

The topic of the moment in the media etc is Rip off IRELAND - not Rip off Dublin

Do you know half of me would do the same, I just dont know what we do with our money we would have quite a bit of money each week we come out with about €1500(weekly) and our mortgage is under €200 a week and we have just one small car loan of about €50 and we save only about €150 a week and then with shopping and bills we would be probably left with about €800 a week :o and we manage to spend that most weeks!
Dublin is becoming outragous to live in!

We are in our house 2.5 years now and I have to say that not only is my mortgage less that €900, its less than €800, and it is in Dublin. Granted its for 30yrs. Can only say that I clear at least 600 a week after tax but H2b does a lot of o/time so his wages changes week by week (basic week though would be a bit less than me).

Maybe it is cheaper in some locations but doesnt it depend on how much you borrow and hoe long the mortgage period is and the percent you got it at?
Im sorry but I think its rude to say Bridgets living in the 1960's
My mortgage is less than €500
& h2bs less than 900

There are some isolated cases where property is as if not more expensive than Dublin. Taken as a whole, Dublin is still the benchmark for property prices

I bought my house last year in Dublin and my mortgage is less than €900 a month. We were able to buy the house for exactly what it was valued at so there was no out-bidding involved to push the price up.

Clondalkin. It was valued at 240k, we had saved 25k ( a lo-hot of hard work that was) so we got 215k from the bank, repayable over 30 years. That gives us a grand total of 873 a month.
