DH(electrician)wants to move to Canada-UPDATE!

Unbelievable, so the bank keep your first two pay packs.... That is a long time to survive on whatever you go over with! Why do they keep it?

Also, do you pay federal and provincial tax.... Some places seem to be more appealing than others now!!!! Ha, ha!! If you have to file your own taxes, does that mean you have to keep that money to one side each time you get paid and pay to authorities in one lump payment or does your employer nett it off?!

Sorry for all the questions!

Just missed my Flip train...damn luas! Won't be home now till about 8pm.... Reason 2,346 on why Canada will be a good move for us... Get to put kids to bed EVERY night!!

think i worded that badly Mrs blacky they just hold the first cheques for the 3-5 days they take to clear and then after that they clear instantly you don't have to wait on them (there are ways round this if you really needed the money though). You do get paid every 2 weeks or on the 15th and 30th in most jobs here. I only know 1 person who gets paid monthly. So when I say 2 cheques it wouldnt even be a full month.

You have to pay both provincial and federal tax. It comes out automatically like Ireland in your pay if your employed, its kinda like when you request your p20 at home but here you have to do them every year. Ive got a refund each year so I like it :)

Even if you are self employed, they pay an estimated return every 3 months then file at the end of the year so you don't have to keep it aside trying not to spend for a year. (this I only know from paying the returns for my biz clients so I could be wrong)

Not so bad!! Hubby used to get paid by cheques when he was self employed so we're used to waiting for cheques to clear!! His sister used to do his returns though because I just kept on getting them wrong! When I do things on a day to day basis I am great at them but leave a months gap and it all goes out of my head.... Or maybe that was just an excuse because I hated doing them!!!! Ha, ha!! I do like the idea of getting refunds but then who doesn't!!

Starzz, did you have a job sorted before you went over and if you didn't, how long did it take to get sorted?

How's the pregnancy going.... You must be well overdue by now! How did your employers react to pregnancy because you probably hadn't been working that long before announcing!

neither of us had a job going over at all. I had an ok job within 2 weeks, but my boss was an idiot so I kept looking and got my current job about 8 weeks later it took longer due to having an email interview, aptitude test, interview with hr and then an interview with my current manager. My current job is in my field full benefits and pays well so i'm happy with that even with the time it took.

my boss didnt mind when i said about pregnancy have been there nearly 18 months now so had been there a while when announced it, well she threw my baby shower so i don't think she objected lol. 4 days over now so this baby better appear soon- maybe not today as theres a snowstorm outside!

hubby got his job after about 6 weeks i think but he did work cash in hand while searching for a job. he is in IT and his company now have us sponsered so we can stay here.

This waiting is terrible! We were all revved up and now we no option but to wait for someone else to take next step!!

I was thinking of starting to send my CV out but decided to not do anything until DHs job offer is set in stone! By sounds of what you say starzz there isn't much of a wait once you get over there and will probably sorting out home and settling kids in!

How long does snow last for starzz? I thought their seasons were very much like our but more defined iykwim and spring is definitely here!! Looking forward to a lovely sunny weekend! We're going to zoo with sil that got married last week..... She lives in Australia so her honeymoon is being spent visiting all of us that she'd never see day-to-day!!!

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time WOL member and occasional lurker but haven't posted in absolutely ages, it may even be years - I forgot my password and just came across it written down a while back. My husband and I and DD moved to outside the Toronto area 2 years ago, we since had another DD over here.

One word of advice, actually already mentioned but please check out your provinces's health coverage. We're on temporary visas (applying for permanency at the moment) so didn't qualify for OHIP, the Ontarion health card for the first 12 weeks. I was 4 months pregnant coming over and to had to pay for all my antenatal appointments and 20 week scan. Not too much but if you got ill or had to go to hospital you're not covered. Hospital care is awful expensive without the coverage. It mightn't apply to your own situation but please any pregnant ladies check it out before you come over.
That's all. I'd be delighted to help anyone with any questions. Canada is a fabulous country especially for raising children. We don't regret a minute of making the decision to move over. Good luck!
