DH(electrician)wants to move to Canada-UPDATE!

Thanks Igotafeeling, it took me a while to get my head around the prospect of leaving& tbh I was(am maybe still)deeply disappointed that we have to put ttc on hold for the time being....
If dh had secure work & plently of stability there is no way we would now be looking to immigrate & NO Enda it is not a lifestyle choice >:o(
But when we researched Canada in depth we saw there was huge earning potential for dh, my salary would be pretty much the same except they seem to have an excellent comission/bonus system in addition to your basic salary.
Healthcare, education & infrastructure is far superior to ours.... Rent & general cost of living is cheaper. Also I looked into maternity & it seems they have an excellent system too-Starrz mentioned in a post above that there is only 2 people sharing a room(public system) she has had 4 scans & is getting very well looked after.
The only thing we are unsure about at the moment is what visa type to apply for-dh is emailing alot of recruiters his CV & he wants to have a job offer negotiated before we head over.
Igotafeeling where would you be thinking of relocating(I think this is a much nicer word than immigrating!)

ask away yummymummy2b, Im on leave without much to do cause we had a lot of snow yesterday so Im hibernating. We've done 2 different visa's the usit one and an employer sponsored one and we're working on the permanent residency. So I can try and help with visa questions.

For anyone else Saskatchewan is really looking for people in all ways and they have actually fastracked their permanent residency applications but you would have to stay in that province until you are a perm resident and most people I know from there cant wait to move to Alberta or BC.

I also wouldnt just chose edmonton or calgary cause of aerlingus, as they are so expensive and you have to change in the states so not a direct flight anyway. We always fly with airtransat into London and then fly back and its a nonstop flight and really cheap generally 1800$ return (1300 euro) for 2, last time i priced aer lingus was 3500$ for same dates.

Hi YummyMummy2b
I moved to Toronto nearly 2 years ago with my other half. He is a carpenter and work dried up for him at home. I was working in a contract position and seeing as we had no mortgage or kids, we made the move. It is very scary leaving family & friends but I have to say it was the best thing we ever did. OH is working away and I have a great marketing job, an experience I would not have got in Ireland. Granted we are in the buzzing city of Toronto, I don’t know what the West is like but there are so many opportunities here. We got engaged when we moved here so we’re planning our wedding which will be back home in September, and we’re also gonna apply for permanent residency to stay here. The homesickness will hit you but like you said it’s not as far away as Oz, and wait till you see the amount of people that will come visit you! Best of luck

Yummymummy2b,

Glad you got on well at the expo, saw the pictures on the news, the place was jammed. It's great you are feeling more positive about the whole thing, I really hope it all works out.

yummymummy2b sounds like you are more confident about your move now.

We travelled to Dublin on Saturday and never got into the expo due to the crowds. We were so disheartened. Read online that people where told to just email the companies CVs so looking into that now.

Hey Girls,
Wow Starzz still snowing over there-it must be so pretty, going to pm you now :thnk Thats great advice re the flights I thought wow Aer Lingus are amazing having 2 direct flights into 2 different Canadian cities lol!! Yes from looking up Satskatchewen it would probable be a last resort as we(well me!!!) would love Alberta.
HappyBride congrats re the engagement-you must be so excited re the wedding it will fly in. Toronto sounds fantastic-at the Expo yesterday it was all about the west so it looks like we will focus on either Satskatchewn or Alberta. It sounds like you both got great oppurtunities in Canada. I am nervous about the homesickness as I am very attached to my parents, 3 sisters & my brother:( I just have to look at the bigger picture...
Thanks Luka-the Expo was heartbreaking their was a real sense of despair & desperation it was so sad to see all the families with young children....
Ah Polly Dolly that is awful you poor things-it was crazy in there. The ammount of queue jumping to speak to the delegates was so frustrating too-some people >:o( I will email you the email addresses of all the companies that were exhibiting in a couple of mins x Hubby was told he would need to go (to Satskatchewan) and start off as a 4th year apprentice as he would not have red seal but they would train him on this & he would qualify after 1 year. It was starting off at 35 dollars an hour(30 euro) and after he gets the red seal 40 dollars. So his take home would be like what Starzz posted below as he would be guarnteed 10 hours o/t per fortnight.. Unreal money.

Hi,

I've been following this thread with interest! We also didn't get into expo and was wondering if you could send me on those email addresses yummymummy?

My husband is a welder but he's 42 now so from what I can read we have to get an offer of employment before he can get a visa but how do you get an offer of employment without meeting someone? I'm 32 so I hope I'll be able to get the u35 visa! Do you think this sounds do-able?

We've been thinking about this now seriously for about 6 months and think we're pretty much decided to try and get over there and give it a try! We both have work (i'm permanent but hes on rolling 3 month contracts) but it's a two hour commute both ways for us both with no chance of getting nearer to home anytime soon. Our kids are in crèche from 7am to 7pm 5 days a week and we want the quality of our family life to improve more than anything.... I also bake for a market (an extra €50 a week i make!) on a saturday so don't get to spend time with kids much at weekend either.

Basically we want to do this for our family so it's our big push!

Might send you a pm starzz when I figure out what questions to ask!!

Thanks

mrsblacky I actually know a couple that were just recruited over here and hes a welder and the company organised all the visas for them and the kids. I can try and get hubby to find the company name for you and see if we can help?

you cant apply for a u35 when your husband isnt eligible as a condition of it is if you are married you must both go on the visa so I think it would be declined on you. not 100% sure but i know when i applied was told i couldnt apply unless hubby applied aswell.

Thanks a million starzz, that'd be brilliant if you could get company name!! Also thanks for info on u35.... In all my looking into things for hubby, I didn't even bother looking at details on that one because I thought it was a given that everyone got it!

We'll keep on researching! Redundancy is going to be announced soon in my job so I'm hoping to get that to help us on our merry way!!

Talk soon I'm sure!!

Starzz thanks so much for the pm last night you have been a tremendous help! Its so nice to hear such positve feedback re what will be our biggest & most important decision as a married couple-feel so grown up!!! Thanks again for the honest frank advice xxxxx Keep us all posted on the baby news!!!
Mrs Blacky we are hoping dh has a job offer before we head over that way the company could assist us on the visa route. Hubbys friend got an offer today in Satscatchewan & they are doing his application for him. Failing this we will go on the U35 but we need to be v quick re our application & Starzz advised me to get cracking on the garda clearance as this can take time. From my border-line obsessive research it seems that family life is greatly encouraged & they place alot of emphasis on work/life balance. Its such a huge decision to make but for us when we hear about the money to be made & the experience its a no-brainer! No problem re the email addresses:)

Thanks!

Did your hubby's friend have to interview/meet anyone in order to get job offer or do they just go by cv/certs and telephone interview ? I'm thinking I still have a lot of research to do.... And there was me thinking I knew what we were undertaking! Can you get Garda clearance sorted before you even start app process?

I did hear about the work life balance and thats what swung it for us!

One more thing for tonight.... I read that there can be quite a wait to get visa sorted but realistically what should we be expecting?

Maybe when we get there we could have a wollie get together!!!!

you have to send the garda clearance with the application so better to apply. once you get it, it is valid for one year. depending on visa it can be immediate, 6 weeks or years depends on the kind you apply for. realistically I'd go for 6-8 weeks ish.

As long as you don't plan on taking many holidays. Remember the normal amount is 10 days per year. Its a struggle for me going from the 25 I had at home!

That said the working day normally starts earlier so finishes earlier so you normally even though you're getting up earlier, you have so much time in the evenings its worth it.

I have a friend who's LO is nearly 2. He was born here and her experience of the maternity care very much echoes Starzzz.
