DH(electrician)wants to move to Canada-UPDATE!

Wow thanks for the insight- I have not have a pay rise in 4 years & also have not had my monthly bonus in 2 years but in saying that I am so thankful to have my jog so I don't complain!! What are holiday entitlements like over there due to my length of service I have fantastic annual leave which will be hard to let go. I can imagine what it is like coming home-that is your holiday not just "going home"!! Do you go home every year?
Banff, Lake Louise & Whistler look out of this world would love all the weekend trips & the option to go skiing in the winter.Love how you describe the evenings-I usually finish work at 7 its 8 when i'm home then its dinner, shower,tv,bed...would love the chance to be more outdoorsy!
Wow thats funny re the retreats & family weekends-its great that they recognise the importance of work/life balance+family time! I can imagine its also a great chance to network & do some self-promotion lol!
Thats great re the rent-we are renting here too(thank God) & it is crazy. Did you have your accomodation sorted before you made the move? Is the rental accomodation of a high standard over there-as you know Dublin can be very hit & miss!!!

HippyChic it sounds fab!! I'd say your relatives never regretted the move for a single second! Love the sound of the lifestyle over there-we could have it too in Ireland we have everything here-the lakes, mountains, beaches, sea but it just seems being outdoors is a way of life over there & they really make the most of their landscape which I feel the Irish don't iykwim.... We did look into the healthcare as we are ttc(which now hubby wants to postpone >:o( ) and it is fantastic. Starrz is getting amazing prenatal care & only 2 in a ward doesn't get much better than that!!

Ill be honest the annual leave is crap basic starts at 10 days a year. you can negotiate more I get 15, hubs gets 10 but he gets 5 personal days he can take as leave and a half day every month so it does even out. There are a lot of holidays, one every month apart from march so you don't feel like your in work all the time either. We will prob have to go home every year as hubs mum is older and cant travel. if it was just my family i probably would stretch it out. But its easy to do one week at home and one week at mexico and you will still have all your bank holidays. I find you just don't waste annual leave on random days the way you do in Ireland cause banks etc are all open sat and sundays and doctors are 7days aswell so you don't need leave for things like that.

We stayed with some family when we first got here, we haven't seen any dumps of rental places our apartment last year was great all utilities included for 1000 a month. we moved to get somewhere more family friendly and we now have a 2bed townhouse for 900 a month, has a full basement and aircon, dishwasher etc.

DH has been talking about this years also.. We both have jobs here. Mine very secure and his is secure for the moment.. But I have a large mortgage from before we met and we both have loans so don't think I could give up jobs, not knowing if we would have money for mortgage etc.. In a lot of neg eq and if we did rent it out, it wouldn't cover the mortgage

Some days I think yeah I'd love to go and other days I'm thinking it's too far, and we have too much debt here

We were meant to go to the last Canadian expo in Dublin a few months ago but couldn't go and we're not away this weekend .. Let us know what you think of the expo

Wow Starzz that is bad-at the moment due to length of service I get 28 not inc bank hols... I was thinking I would get home twice a year & we may get a little caribbean break as well :o0 That sounds like an amazing little home you have sorted now in time for babs-that great thats its all-inc too. Apparently property is very expensive to buy there & the banks are very strict in lending... i guess thats why Canada is booming & we are still severely suffering...

Yes Rainbow Ninja will post about expo.We have no mortgage-have a deposit saved but had been afraid to take the plunge tbh & people kept telling us hold off prices will drop further etc. Also with me being in retail & dh a tradesman we would prob struggle getting a mortgage at the moment as we are both seen as a high risk due to the nature of our sectors at the moment....
If we had a mortgage there is no way we would risk going in case things didn't work out. I know what you mean about being so far away but its closer than Oz/NZ but to me it feels alot more familiar even though I've never been!!

Thanks a million for posting that Lizzie-I am starting to come around to the idea & dare I say a little excited...!! I think as we are young, newly weds, no loans/mortgage/kids we are in a perfect position to just do it & not live to regret it. I know if the shoe was on the other foot hubby would do it for me.

My Hubby is also thinking of going he is a cabient maker but our problem is his age is against him.He has some work at the moment but not enough to keep thing going. He is thinking of going alone and if things go well i will folow on.The problem is that i have a perment Job and that but i could always take a carear break for up to 5 years. We will have to see is there any postions for the type of job that he does.It is so hard to know what to do or do we sit tight and hope that things improve here.

Pollydolly hopefully the expo will answer alot of questions. DH is alot more determined than me but I totally agree with your attitude-nothing ventured nothing gained!!! It is a huge decision but the way I am kind of looking at it is dh has huge earning potential over there & they desperately need skilled electricians-he is so fed up with working up to 15 hours over his 39 hours contract(unpaid!!!) with the promise of time in lieu that always gets rejected when he or any of the other guys request it but thats just the way his field has become... I know your situation is complely different but the Canadian education system is suppose to be amazing, see starzz post above re the health care she has been recieving during her pregnancy plus dc2 would be a Canadian citizen automatically(i think!!)

Dymo I know how you feel dh is the same just enough to keep him going but has been told there will be a lull after paddy's day.... I hate to be negative but all these talks of a mini budget & a second bail out are not good...

That is the things we are lucky in that we have no mortage and owe very little. But i know it is hard on him not having that much money as he is self employed and when he has no work gets nothing the fact that i work he will get 59 cents on the dole not a lot of good that is. We will just have to look into it at his age it is so hard to be going abroad to look for something after being self employed for the last 20 years.

Yummumummy2b i think it is montreal, he went over for a week or two and she followed over with their dd. They were home at x mas and said they loved it, dh has a really good job now over loads of other guys now too.

There seems to be great opportunity there, only down fall i would think is the flight is so long, but then again that wouldnt bother me for oz. . . .

I wont ever be going because because of kids, mortgage etc. but id love to go i reckon you should seize it when you have a chance, great experience!

Re: DH(electrician)wants to move to Canada-UPDATE!

Postby YummyMummy2b » Mon Mar 05, 2022 1:59 pm

Hi Girls

Just want to let you know that we attended the expo yesterday. We were extremely lucky in that we got there extremely early & we got to speak to the Canadian recruitment delegates albiet a long wait to speak to each stand! The expo itself was heartbreaking, it was so sad to see so many young & suprisingly older couples & families who obviously see no other way out.... I am alot more enthusiastic about the move today after attending the expo. All we spoke to agreed dh would have absolutely no problem getting work-some companies actually train you on the red seal(Canada's version of Fetac) while you are doing your induction training.
I felt the expo really was only for Skilled Trades but any of the recruiters we spoke to said my Retail Management experience would also open doors in recruitment, HR, customer service & I may also be able to get into the tourism sector which is also expanding rapidly.
The areas we were tolda about were Saskatchewen(excuse the spelling-I can't pronounce it not to mind spell it!!) & the town of Saskatoon which is a city of 250k. I would prefer Alberta in particular Edmonton or Calgary just because Aer Lingus flies into these directly but just as long as dh gets a job I'll work around that. We couldn't believe the money they were talking about yesterday-it is unreal so I just have to think about that & take the attitude that we must make hay while the sun shines-in Canada!
Starzz I hope you don't mind if I email you in a bit-best of luck too you must be due any day now! I have so much to ask but totally understand if I don't hear from you for a while!

im really happy that you are now happier about the move! Think there is definitely so many people out there who never contemplated leaving which now have no other choice.

I hope you keep us posted and let us know what the final decision and outcome is! There is a chance that we will be leaving ireland too if hubby has his way. The family issue is my biggest issue too. I was glad to hear wollies saying that the lonlieness is outweighed by the good in leaving
