Naturally skinny dog?

Postby bazinga » Thu May 03, 2022 12:00 pm

Ok - prize for silliest title is mine I guess.

So it's a bit of a rant really. Was walking Ruby yesterday and 3 seperate people remarked to my OH that "Oh she needs wormed" or "Oh you aren't feeding her" and it is really starting to get us.

She was at the Vet last month for a general check up, so I know there is nothing wrong with her. She is feeding away, no signs of worm in stools, stools are all solid etc. No vomiting, no bloating, no assrubbing. We have upped her food intake each month as she grows and on top of that she gets her training treats, some chicken etc so she is fed well - always full of energy.

I am friends with her breeder on FB and would regularly send him pics/videos and he remarks all the time that she is looking good/like her mum/granny etc, so is she just naturally skinnier than other dogs?? Is that such a thing? Or could there be something else?

What sort of a dog and what age? I know people are saying that to me too but Bailey is only a pup and she was real fat and cute when we got her, as she's stretching she looks much skinnier though

What breed is she and is she a small build for the breed?

We have a female cavalier and she is tiny- most people think she's still a pup (she'll be 2 in July so she's fully grown). She is very small for the breed though- even her face and her bone structure is very small.
Our boy looks like a big lump beside her even though he's in no way overweight.

She's a 6 month Springer, so she is looking fairly stretched alright. She was never really puddy like some pups. I just got really annoyed with the comments and the looks like we were straving her or something. Is probably just a growth spurt has her looking skinnier than usual.

Bazinga overreacting again :o0

tell them to puddle off, they could do with a bit of starving themselves! I bring my pup to the football all the time and one fella asked me if I'd been starving her, I was walking past a big group and he shouted this over at me, I was mortified. I'd only got her when he saw her first and the breeder had been feeding her mince and puppy nuts so she was a bit fat, once she started to stretch, she looks much skinnier.

Have you any pics? Then we could maybe tell if shes underweight or not.

Some people feed their dogs far too much so maybe they are comparing their fat dogs to yours?

Puppies can tend to be lanky or pudgy depending on the breed.

She looks perfectly healthy to me :wv

As i said, their dogs are probably over weight so yours then looks skinny compared to theirs. She looks the picture of health to me so i wouldnt worry. :)

Thanks Andi, you are right, a lot of dogs are overfed so it is probably a combination of that and her growth spurt. A load of upset over some silly comments - I will try to ignore it in future, just upset me a bit! Probably irrational.

Thanks again everyone

The last time I was at the vet I asked him if he thought my dog was too skinny. We feed her more than the guide says on her food but she still doesn't put on any weight. He felt around her shoulders and thighs and said she was nice and musclular and not to worry that she seemed a bit skinny in the middle. He said I had nothing to worry about and that most dogs he sees have the oppposite problem in that they are overweight, said it is a huge problem generally and that even a slightly underweight dog is much healthier than a fat one.

Oh thanks teapotty, that's good to hear! She would be very muscular and strong legs and neck it is just the middle part that's skinny. As you say, I'd rather that than having her too heavy.

my god some people are so pass remarkable. Id be furious if someone said that to be about either of my dogs. I would probably say "Yea I starve my dogs and then bring them walking to stress them". Your dog is a lovely little guy and certainly doesnt look underweight..

Bazinga your doggy is only gorgeous!! Looks really good for an ol cuddle and her coat is only gorgeous- beautiful shine to it!

No way is your dog too skinny- like OP said- most dogs are overfed and not walked enough and therefore over weight. She is absolutely perfect!!

I was mad to get a Spanial but H2B not gone on them - think they are divine altogether!
