Hi all

hope your all well! I am due twins in a few weeks!! very exciting!!! i'm 34 weeks gone at the moment. It crossed my mind yesterday (and also alot of people are asking me so who's coming to help out) about how much support you need when you arrive home from hospital? Is there anything you mums would recommend or did to make things easier? I know i will have to get used to the idea of having 3 under 3 and really I'm not worried that I won't cope etc but would you advise to have someone in the house for the first couple of weeks?

thanks

Hi there muminmay!
Exciting times, countdown on now!
Have twin girls nearly 6 months old now, they're our only kids. We'd no help coming from hospital, a number of reasons. We're living in dublin but our families are in other ends of country. Have loads of friends around but almost none of them have kids and offered all the help in the world but to be honest would have probably been more work havibg them here too than anything else! And if 'twas my hubbie that was writing thus he'd say that im a bit of a control frek and like to b in control at all times and things done my way!
Every bit of advice I got was to take all the help you can get but unless whoevers coming into help is someone who u are v close to then mayb think twice. The most stressful part of it all for the first few weeks was ppl visiting and handling/cuddling/waking the girls! And they'd leave and we'd b left to deal with two babies who wanted to be held constantly!
If u have older children I'd say the best help in the world would b someone to take those off outta the house to give you a change to establish ur routine with ur new arrivals - that would b a godsend!
I found (and I mite b reading too much into thus) but cos uve twins ppl assume that when they visit that they can 'take' one and that that really helps! Again meaning well but often more hassle than worth again when baby decides that they don't like this strange person!

So basically, unless ur v close to the person you'd like to bring in then just let them take the older kids and leave u with babies. Or get ppl to do the washing/ironing for you - lets u focus on new babies!
Register for online food shopping!
Have a sign (wink/nose rub!!) with ur other half as to when u want to take babies back from guest/want quiet word etc
Go with ur gut! Mammy knows best always!
Limit visitors - limit pass the baby game
Enjoy every second! It's truly amazing!

thanks Elizajane!! I was hoping someone would come back and say what I was thinking!!

I honestly don't want to have to get anyone to move in I'm really just loving the idea of our little family 5 of us not so little!!! to be at home and enjoying the new arrivals. Yes I do understand that DS will find the adjustment a little hard in the beginning but he loves babies so hopefully he will continue to love them. I send him part time to creche so may continue to do that after they arrive or even for the first couple of weeks send him full time.

I have DH mother coming in once a week with the last couple of weeks doing all the hoovering and general big housework and she is delighted this is the way she can help and will continue to do this, DH father will take DS for a couple of evenings a week has a play area built at their house for him etc and is delighted to be able to spend more time with him. Its the SIL's that I am worried about they used to just come in and pick DS up when he was asleep when he would be in his moses basket. I used to freak out.

DH's friend had twins before christmas and they wouldn't let anyone pick up their babies so DH said thats the way we are going too. unless I give the babies to someone to hold then the passing the baby will not be happening!

I have none of my own family around me and all are working so I don't know if I will see them much until I'm back on my feet to travel to them. sometimes I wish I did live near them so that I can ask for help more if I needed but this is the way it is!
thanks again on the reply and I hope the girls are doing well for you!

I think you have exactly what you need with the dh's parents, that'll b a godsend. And after that ur going to be fine, trust me.
I know what u mean about the sil's!
Two things we did - I started getting v good at telling white lies! We'd 8 days straight of having visitors after they were about 2 wks home and I was nearly gone silly so I started telling ppl that x or y was calling this evening and would they mind leaving it till another day and by doing this I limited it to one or two visitors a wk. it also wasn't fair on DH, he doesn't get home till half 7 n the evenings and the last thing he needed were visitors there to greet him when all he wanted was to spend time with his babies!
Also when ppl were here and I was letting them hold a baby i'd give them baby, go into kitchen and make a cup of tea for us all, land out with the tea (5/10 mins later) and say "here let me take her from you and let you have ur tea in peace"! Ya can nearly b taking the baby outta their arms as ur saying it! Get hubbie to do likewise!
I sound terrible but you have to for ur own sanity and also to allow you to enjoy ur babies!

Oh and one other quick thing- try keep the weekends as free as possible - we still try and keep one full day of no one but ourselves with the girls at wknd, in particular for hubbie before he has to go back to work on Monday!

Hi everyone :)

I'm a new twin mommy! Caoimhe and Sean were born on March 28th at 35wks in Mullingar Hosp. Sean was 5lb 5oz and Caoimhe was 6lb 1oz. They are both doing great thank god! I had a section and both babies went straight to the Special Care Baby Unit of the hosp when they were born. Sean was alot stronger, Caoimhe was having trouble with her breathing as she had some fluid on her lungs. She was transferred to Holles St and stayed there for 5nights. But when they were reunited both started to thrive and a wk later, when they were 15days old we brought them home! Still can't believe they are 5wks old today!

One blessing from their little stay in SCBU is the great routine they have. At the moment they get fed every 4 hours, caoimhe on the hour and Sean on the half hour so you have one finished before the other is hungry! I have such great help from my family, my mam comes up every morn to do the morning feed and I get to stay in bed! My sisters have stayed over a couple of nights to do night feeds, they have been a great help. One thing we stuck to our guns about was if visitors call and the babies are sleeping we do not take them out of their cot. They only get held after their feeds and only for short times. Think you need to stick to a routine or you'd never have a minute to yourself! Definitely take any help cleaning wise, or with laundry and making meals etc!

hope all the twin mams are keeping well! Looking forward to sharing tips and stories with you all! :)

first of all Congrats MrsMinnie, great your babies are doing well!!! :o)ll :o)ll

I'm 37 weeks today, can't wait to meet our babies!! Had a full scan done on Monday as high blood pressure and protein in urine, both babies are measuring over 37 weeks on Monday so all looking good weight wise.

thanks to you both (elizajane) for advice seems its down to routine and knowing when to accept help and keep the visitors to a minimum!
