What's your unpopular opinion

I would much rather charities like MS/MND/cancer getting that amount of oppurtunities for collecting as I have professionally witnessed first hand the excellent work they do supporting families and patients, providing counciling, services, peer support, respite and equipment among many other great things. Thus I think there is no comparing the asthma soc to any of those

What? Did you read the link? The asthma society does all of these things too! Just because you haven't seen it personally doesn't make it any less valid.

I've no problem with people complaining about how charities collect, there's some that I disagree with a lot. However, having a problem because you don't understand what the charity does or think (like some people do) that sure asthma's not so bad, is what annoys me.

No where did I undermine the seriousness of asthma, I am well aware of the limitations of respiratory conditions and how scary they can be for clients. Went through the website but not seeing any of the services I mentioned. They do have a services page which list a helpline, products u can purchase and campaigns.

That comment wasn't directed at you, it was a general comment.

You said the society does research and education. While it does, and those are excellent, it also does much more.

Patient services is the other main category, which includes many of the things you mentioned like counselling, workshops, support etc. Obviously, for most asthma sufferers, the main resource is information, which is why the focus is on this. The need for counselling etc is not as prevalent as with diseases like cancer and MS. Each charity needs to focus on the most important areas as needed by their sufferers. They do provide financial support for equipment etc also when necessary ( I only know this because my nan had to avail of it before she died-asthma related)

Don't get me wrong, this is not 'this charity is better than that charity' nonsense.MS Ireland is an amazing organisation. Some of the cancer supporting charities are fantastic. I also think Asthma Ireland is a good cause. For any disease/issue, there are good and bad charities. My comment was simply in response to someone hating 'asthma' collectors because 'what do they do'.

Engagement ring valuations are one big scam. All of this 'I bought it for this, but it's worth this' is a load of rubbish. It's generally worth what you paid for it. Of course some jewelers will give you a better deal, you may get a better deal abroad etc, but why is it that everyone's ring is valued at more than it was purchased for?
Why is it that if you tried to actually sell your diamond/stone that you'd be lucky to get a third of it? Jewellers are simple massaging the ego of it's customer.

There is no need to spend € 30 on every child you know, ie all your nieces and nephews, all your friends kids etc for Christmas and birthdays. It is insanity. They don't need all that stuff and they probably don't get to play with half of it and they sure as hell don't appreciate you spending your hard earned cash on them. I'm pretty sure I got presents from my parents and my godmother for my birthdays growing up and I wasn't deprived. This is such a Celtic tiger hangover and there's no need for it at all.

How in the name of Jesus did this thread sink so low (down the page)?

Anyway, as I was saying - the French language and accent isn't all that sexy.
