Hyper, gosh that's sad news. As other posters have said they have caught it early which is a good thing and widens the options for treatment. I have no experience of cervical cancer but I have a friend who's a nutritionist who advises cancer patients to really work on their diet and eat healthy foods (no red meat or processed foods) as it helps keep the body strong to fight. The very best of luck to you and your family and remember to vent on Wol if you feel the need

+1, I am terrible for the self diagnosis on google too but it doesn't help and only worries you out of your mind.

Hope you and your family are ok and will be thinking of you guys and your Mum. X

Hope you are ok. my dad told us last night that he started a course of radiotherapy three days ago so can relate a little.
lets hope they both come through this - my positive story is that my mum had breast cancer 6 years ago and after surgery and chemo she has been cancer free ever since.

my aunt got the same news a few weeks ago but they also thought she had a massive tumour and made it all sound really bad etc.
after they did the biopsy and got the results back we've been told they're doing a hysterectomy and should be able to get everything so she wont need any further treatment.
a hysterectomy isnt exactly good news but we were all delighted as its not as bad as first thought.
we automatically assume the worst but its just so hard when you have to wait and not knowing whats going to happen. now that she knows its x and we're doing x etc, its much easier.
i hope you get the same sort of news, thinking of you xxx

ah Hyper, sorry for your troubles :action32 :action32 .
My mom had this too but she turned out ab fine and even went on to fight another type of cancer and recover from that too.
Cervical cancer if caught early is v treatable and it seems it is early in your mom's case-not needing chemo or radiotherapy is v good if surgery should sort things out. Don't be afraid to chat to your mom openly and be positive and upbeat with her-do some nice girly things with her too and make sure her diet is healthy and she gets some exercise.
The Irish cancer soc do have helplines if you or her want advice help and their website has lots of useful info. Ye will get through this-don't let this nasty disease dominate yeer lives. :xox

Totally know how you're feeling but seems from what you've been told that theres no reason to think this won't have a positive outcome.

I have a positive story. My Aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. 6 weeks later my Mum, her sister, got the same diagnosis. They both had partial mastectomies and radiotherapy, my aunt 6 weeks ahead of Mum. They are both perfect now and apart from slightly wonky boobs (underwear shopping is trickier :o0 ) you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with them. They were both back at work a few weeks after their radiotherapy finished.

Its the initial shock that got all of us. My Mum has 4 kids and we all went to the hospital with her when she got her diagnosis. My sister and I went into the room with her and I remember the tears well. Its a real punch in the face when you hear those words.

My Mum is due to have a precautionary hysterectomy next month and while shes a bit worried about the actual surgery, she had such a positive experience with the health service throughout her breast cancer that she has every faith that this will have an excellent outcome too.

It is hard when theres nothing you can do, but I think its a good idea to follow shumbles advice. It will help your Mums health and give you something to concentrate on. Also offering lifts and company to appointments. My Mum had a different friend or family member driving her to her radiotherapy everyday so that helped as the appointments were in Dublin and we lived in Kildare.

The one thing I remember her saying about that was that it was a pain in the ass because you have to attend so frequently so she looked at it as her job. She got up every morning, shower, makeup, got dressed and went to "work". Nobody likes going to work but it has to be done. :o0

Best of Luck to you and your family. :thnk

Littlelily do you mind me asking if there was many side effects to radiotherapy? my mum has been through chemo so i know what that was like but i dont really know anything about radiotherapy and what my dad might be able for or not able for.

I think its much easier to manage than the chemo. Mum was pretty tired but that was perhaps a combination of the commute and the treatment. She did have quite a large radiation burn on her chest which has since healed. It gave her a bit of bother, a bit painful and she had to invest in a few higher necked tops. It started out small and got bigger as the treatment went on. She used some natural remedies to ease it a bit as there wasn't a whole lot that could be done but they gave her a bit of relief. Can't remember what they were now, but I can ask her.

There a few things she wasn't allowed do. One of them was swimming in a pool (which she loves). We used to joke with her that the reason she couldn't was because she was so radioactive she would boil the water.

I'm afraid I have no advice to give - and no experience to offer.
However I did just want to wish you and your mum the best of luck - I really hope it all works out *)
