Thought that was different as the refund I applied for is to do with PRSI??

Its all paid to revenue though so is it not all on the same thing? I'm confused now

See link from welfare website regarding health levy refund:

http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Press/PressReleases/2012/Pages/pr010212.aspx

The front page of the revenue website is pointing to the above link in their news section.

I think there is two different things being talked about here.

(1) Is the universal Health Charge and as discussed above if you earned 26K or under you are entitled to a refund on the charge that you paid.

(2) PRSI is totally different and some people may have over paid and some underpaid. I for one underpaid back in 2007 (unknowingly) and so it's being taken off my Tax Credits for 2012 and 2013. You can ask for a review and often you receive something back or in my case the OPPOSITE!

It's just when I was reading this thread I was getting confused.

Littlebo - the health charge used to be included in the prsi calculation.

I know Cinnabon, you're right. sorry should have stated for 2011 claims that you can reclaim back the Universal Health charge that was applied.

The above link which was updated earlier this month only mentions up to 2010. Not sure what the sitation is once the USC got implemented last year.

So basically if you earned less than 26k in the year but earned more than 500 in any week then you may have been charged it and would be due a refund.

If you earned less than 26k and didnt earn more than 500 a week then you wouldnt have been charged it so wouldnt be due a refund.

I'm confused between the Health Contribution and USC, all I have on my pay slip for 2010 is Paye/PRSI and Income levy

Mrs W - my understanding is that the health levy is now included in the USC (I could be incorrect on this) whereas before it was included in the PRSI calculation.

The USC came into force in 2011 so your 2010 is accuarate with PAYE/PRSI & income levy - the health levy refund is coming from PRSI up to 2010. Hope that makes some sense to you.

Think a few people are confused:

PRSI - Pay-Related Social Insurance (PRSI) contributions payable by every employee. If you earned less than €26,000 in 2008, 2009 & 2010 and earned more than €500 in any one week in any year or were a medical card holder, then you may be entitled to a refund in respect of the Health Levy element of the PRSI contribution. Apply for refunds to PRSI Refunds Section, Oisin House, Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

USC - The Universal Social Charge (USC) is a tax that has replaced both the income levy and the health levy (also known as the health contribution part of the PRSI) since 1 January 2011. You may be entitled to a refund if you were a medical card holder or if your total income for the year is under €10,036. Apply for refunds to Revenue - local tax office

Income Levy - A levy is a tax on your income in the years 2009 and 2010. You may be entitled to a refund if you were a medical card holder or if your total income for the year is under €15,028. Apply for refunds to Revenue - local tax office

PAYE tax - Pay As You Earn tax payable by every employee. If you overpaid tax or have any credits you can claim a refund from Revenue - local tax office. It is also possible to underpay!
