I couldn't believe people were that clueless. I mean, I knew they did these things, I suppose I just didn't realise they actually believed they were cooking the perfect steak. I just figured people who cooked like that knew they were bad cooks.

Most chefs (including my brother-in-law) will tell you that finishing a steak in the oven can actually work very well. It depends on the cut. A thin steak should never be placed in the oven. However, a thick cut steak can be quite tender after it's been finished in the oven. I don't always cook steak like this, but when I do, it's always delicious. And yes, I can cook. Very well too if I do say so myself.

I also agree with mammy2011 that some foodies are up their own arses.

I agree with lolabelle re the Catholic Church.

Lastly, my own personal unpopular opinion is that every woman should have the right to choose. Regardless of circumstance.

You know most chefs? Lucky you!

My brother is a chef too.

I do indeed. Know 'em all. Best buds with all the top chefs, me.

Of course, I don't know 'most' chefs, but most of whom I've met/whose books I've read, have on many occasions mentioned finishing a steak in the oven. I just don't think it's as ludicrous as you make out and my BIL and his mates would vouch for that. I didn't post that on the original 'steak' thread though. Just saying that if some wollies cook their steaks like that, it's not as heinous as you make it out to be. Then again, each to their own. You don't like steaks cooked like that, that's absolutely fine.

Purely out of interest, how do you cook steak and how do you like to eat it?

Mmmm lets see, for my own 2 cents, I don't think any male/female friendship is 100% platonic!! I think there will have been a stage in most of these relationships where one person has fancied the other at least slightly and probably only temporarily.

Look, it's an unpopular opinions thread - do we really need to pick one another's unpopular opinions apart?

And I don't agree that people renting should be exempt from the tax, they too should contribute to their community. I don't understand people who act as if taxes are some al a carte option.

I think since Big Phil keeps harping on about it "only being 2 euro a week" should let us pay 2 euro a week. As a direct debit or as a weekly payment in the post office. They'll get their money and it's up to them to budget it over the year. I can't tell my employers to give me my years wages and I'll work for it for the year

I'm genuinely interested as to how you cook your steak. I like a nice thick fillet steak, like it medium so I would cook it a high heat on a griddle pan for few mins on both sides and then finish in oven for 10 or 15 minutes depending on thickness and its always perfect. If there's a better way to cook it, I'm interested to hear it. Genuinely.

I agree. I have to drive past a "common" area to get into town and as long as I'm doing it there's the same scroungers standing outside talking all day. Get off your hole and get a job.
People who weren't arsed getting a job in the boom should be either cut off or made work for their benefits

+1million!!!

I'm sick to the back teeth of "friends" on Facebook giving out about politicians and benefits being cut when they're living in a council house with their partner and 3 children, driving fancy cars and out 2 nights at the weekend but no intention of ever gettin a job, drives me demented!! And then whinging about politicians, at least they do a days bloody work!!

Ok, here's a really unpopular one: I think the US/UN/superpowers in general should be invading more countries, not fewer. There are places in this world where people are treated like absolute dirt, where women are not allowed go to school, work, drive or own property; where rape victims are forced to marry their attackers; and the fact that we in the West sit on our arses saying "Isn't that desperate?" while people are living in daily hell just makes me really mad. We're supposed to be a global community, and yet we use the excuse that "That's just how things are done over there" to excuse ourselves letting these regimes go on and on.

To me a medium cooked steak is a mortal sin. And ten to fifteen minutes in the oven - are you crazy? Even if you put your steak in the oven it's not supposed to be for more than a few mins. To me that is an overcooked steak. I let the steak come to room temp from the fridge so that can take about an hour. Then I heat a pan really hot and cook my steak which has been rubbed with perhaps some butter or maybe olive oil for about a min and half each side. Then leave to rest for a few mins.

If I am completely honest I think Steak is one of the most boring dinner choices and while I think it tastes great on the odd occasion I hate the way Irish people always seem to order a steak when eating out and usually order it well done i.e. burnt.

This one is going to be unpopular (or just very un-pc) I admit I am racist towards Roma gypsies.
I am ashamed of it and when I do think a racist thought I do correct myself but the initial thought is there.

That's not an unpopular opinion. Most people would agree. And if you really do have that opinion you should reconsider your signature. It's not even funny to joke about dividing by 0! :eek :o0 :eek

Here are some of mine.

It's not that hard to learn about grammar and how to use punctuation, especially apostrophes. (I'm not talking about spelling here, I'm talking about grammar rules.)

I can relate to the shame of feeling like this. Having to go on social welfare after being let go really REALLY got to me when they made me jump through hoops to collect a pittance so I could pay my bills still having worked solidly for about 13 years. There were non nationals there, coinicidently they were Romany, and as they don't exactly talk quietly, I gathered they were getting a hell if a lot more than I was and I did have a moment where I uttered a few choice words to myself about them. Sometimes the system does the opposite of what it perhaps intends and breeds racism. Or that could be another of my unpopular opinions
