Well my cocker loves to chase anything that will move (other dogs/birds/balls/leaves literally anything she can run after except cars which is handy!) and this includes cats and she will bark at them when they come into our garden which is strange as she rarely barks. The other day she was off the lead when we were around our estate and she saw a cat and took off towards it….it turned around, arched its back and hissed at her….well did she run away terrified!! She then got into her pouncing position and let out her frustrated wee bark and it moved towards her and she ran away…I swear it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen!! She hasn’t seen a cat up close since so not sure how that is gonna go!!

Bridee2b do you think it could be a protection thing with you? Mine treats me completely different to my OH. If I walk her on my own down the country roads off the lead she sticks right by my side and won’t let me out of her sight. If the 2 of us go she will wander a bit ahead and sniff around the fields and stuff…its like she thinks she is bringing me for walk sometimes when I am on my own!!! If I am home alone with her and the door goes she is right on alert but not so much when the 2 of us are there. Also she will play tug of war really roughly (like not aggressively or anything but will do her best to get it off him) with OH but if I take the rope toy its like she is pretending to play with it just to keep me happy – she won’t give it the welly she gives it with OH. Whereas she comes and sits on my laps for cuddles and jumps up on me for rubs!! Strange but I think she just figures we are both good for different things!

:yelrotflmaosmilie: I'm laughing at the image of your little lady with the cat... I could see this happening with our pooch - he's all mouth, but when it comes down to it he's a wuss at heart!! :o0

It's mad isn't it, I could have written the last piece of your post... Our guy is exactly as you have said... When I made enquiries at his kennels as to how he was with other dogs, they said they never have a problem with him, and when I explained how he is with me they said that it could well be a protective issue! I know it's sweet to think that he feels the need to protect me, but it isn't very social behaviour when you are out in public :-8 I think I just need lessons on how I should be reacting to his behaviour, and perhaps this would lead to a more passive dog when out on his walks!!

It's so odd though, my OH always comments on how our little man always seems to want to play with the OH, and even when he does play with me, it's a lot calmer and less demanding! I always thought that it was the OH reading into things, but perhaps I may just have to face facts that perhaps our little mutt is so intelligent that he has now learned how to play us off each other!!!

I know that it does feel like sweet behavior but from what I have read in books and across forums it shouldn’t be allowed. If you ever read the threads of what to do when you have a baby one of the key things is not to let the dog get to be protective of the baby cos that is bad…tbh I don’t really know why :-8 but it is recurring advice from the people in the know!!
I don’t know how you would deal with the behaviour either. Our little one wouldn’t be aggressive with other dogs at all but that could be something to do with the difference in males/females I would say? Is he neutered?

I definitely think they are intelligent enough to pick up on these things and treat us differently!

Yeah, I think we will be enrolling in some classes after the wedding and get to the bottom of it... He is neutered, but to be honest he was always a bit edgy with some dogs, even when he was a pup. But, they pick things up quickly, so I'm hopeful that if I put in the time and effort with him he'll learn to get over his 'issues'!!

Out dog was a bit nervous of other dogs when we got him 1st but he's grand now. He loves other dogs company and has a ball playing with them. He's a bit nervous still of our friends dog, a lab, but last time after while he was playing with him. Every now and then he'd run back and hide behind us but def an improvement on before. He's perfect with smaller dogs especially my cousins female king charles. He loves playing with her.

He's gotten really good on walks as well. At night when my husband brings him out he can let him off lead a good bit. If he goes on ahead he just tells him to come back and go inside and Buddy runs back and walks beside him on the inside. Then at the lakes we let him run in the grass, he'll go a bit and then look back to make sure he can see us. and he hops in and out of the water for a swim.
They're such smart dogs. If we tell him 'Get your bone/ duck/ ball etc he'll go and get exactly what we asked. And if we say' 'will we go for a walk/ go in the car' no matter what he's doing he'll stop, ears will go up and he'll run over to the press where we keep the lead.

I often wonder what it might be like if they could actually talk... I think our chappie would have our heads wrecked... 'Are we going for a walk now? Are we?? Are we??? Are we going now?? Perhaps we can go in the car... Can we go in the car? Please... Pretty please... Can we, can we??!!' :o0

Have any of you got this bowl?

http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_ ... wls/198032

Its apparently for long eared dogs and stops their ears going into bowl. Buddy's water bowl is a wide one and anytime he drinks from it his ears get a soaking and then he comes up for a cuddle and leaves a trail of dampness behind him!!

Hi SW,

I have the cocker / long ear dog bowls... it doesnt look like that one shown in the picture... the height of the bowl is higher than normal so his ears fall down around the bowl rather than in his food.... they are excellent.... maybe the picture isnt the actual bowl??
