Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Re: Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Postby beechwood2010 » Thu Apr 19, 2022 11:40 am

Hi there,

i have a wedding in May so I need to express for a full day for my son who will be 2 months then. It will be my first time having a few drinks so say I start drinking at 4pm and have 2 or 3 glasses of wine and 4 or 5 bottles of beer and finish up and 2/3am. What time is it safe to feed again the next day, do i need to pump and dump or is this only necessary if i am uncomfy?

Ta,

xo

WinterB2B, congrats :o)ll Would you think about seeing a lactation consultant. They could look at the latch and see what's going on. Just since it was so hard for you last time, it would be an awful shame if you didn't get to enjoy it this time.

Beechwood, not knowing the details of your wedding but would it be possible for someone to bring baby to you during the day for a feed. My DS is 2 months now and I would be super uncomfortable if I didn't feed for the day. For DH's graduation I was away from DS for 6 hours and had to express for fear of leaking etc. May not be the same for you but worth considering. As for the drinking, once you feel sober enough to drive they say you are fit to feed baby. No need to pump and dump for his sake as the alcohol leaves your milk the same way it leaves your bloodstream.

Thanks girls. I reassessed how I latch dd on both breasts and I do it differently on left than right. I seem to find it difficult to bring baby to breast on left hand side. She seems to pull herself on&off nipple.
I was reading back on the problems I had feeding ds and this was one of them, to make it easier I started using a nipple shield, don't want to use them.
Phn is on holidays until monday.
This may seem like a stupid question, how do I contact a lactation consultant through hospital, la lech, phn, gp?

can only reply quickly w2b but just wanted to say that I also was having trouble with one side on dd1 and it was the latch. Midwife who came to house showed me different holds and it eased the friction being the same place each time and was much better. Try the rugby hold, found this the easiest.

also when feeding, even now, I need a pillow or cushion on my lap or under arm the side dd2 is feeding on. it's a great help.

your hospital should have an LC or if you google there should be a registered LC list online

good luck!

Thanks Daff. Its the rugby hold that I find easier to use. I'm going to try feeding her lying down.
I also haven't tried using pillow/cushion. I had forgotten that I use to do that.

thanks for the advice guys.. is it not awkward taking pump to wedding and have to go out and pump and dump if I am really uncomfy.. I sound so selfish i know.....
so ill have a few drinks and enjoy myself and maybe stop around midnight so I should be fine to feed LO from 10ish... he will prob stay over in my mams so Im gonna take advantage of a nice lie on.. will be first since he was born.
Other question.. i have been expressing in the build up to this day and will be giving all my little bags of "mammy mik" to my mam.. is it okay to mix different dates of milk and then heat and then feed to LO?

Winterb2b here is a list of LCs and their contact details

Beechwood, you're not selfish at all, a night off is lovely. But I would bring the pump in case you get too uncomfy to enjoy yourself IYKWIM. You may be fine and not get engorged at all, but there is nothing worse than being engorged and having no efficient way of relieving it. I've always mixed milks from different dates.

Thanks tilsun, I rang the lactation consultant for my area and she visited earlier. The pain in my left breast was unbareable. Basically DD isnt latching on properly so theres a big cut on my nipple. She has shown me a few different positions to hold her in hope that the nipple will heal, shes going to call back Monday to see how I get on over the weekend.

I really want breastfeeding to work this time.

Winter really hope u get it sorted. Having had 2 lo's I really feel that sometimes one side can be a problem more than another. I had problems on right side with both dd's and think it was shape of nipple it's flatter than the other side. I did find once I got latch sorted it got better gradually. Really hope u get it sorted. Try not to panic u are nor destined to go down the same road as last time. You have so much more experience now which will stand to you. Good luck. S

Winter u poor poor thing. I know u don't want to use shield but I would use one at this stage. Even twenty four hours would give your nipple the chance to heal. I was bleeding too on dd1 due to bad latch in the hospital and using shields just for a day or two gave me a chance to heal. If u express that might be good too just put pump on low setting.

I'd agree you should try the shield, Winter B2B. I had to use them with DD1 for the first 6 weeks as she had problems latching, but she fed well and we weaned off them fully by 6 weeks. This time DD2 is latching on well, but I have damage to one nipple that wasn't healing, so I've been using the shield on that side since yesterday to give it a chance to heal. Latching on is painless and DD is feeding well with it and the damage has already healed a good bit in 24 hours. It's worth it if it keeps your LO feeding and stimulating your supply. Best of luck and hope tonight is better for you.

Hi girls, sorry to jump on here as i never post but i need a bit of advise if ye dont mind.
My DD is 9 weeks today and exclusively bfed. For the last few days is very fussy in the evenings and constantly on the breast. She is also very unsettled at night. I have read that this is normal. However, the thing is I feel I have a lot less milk the last few days. My breasts never get hard or full and when she is feeding I can tell that she is swallowing less...I think anyway.
Is there anything I can do? So far she has been taking one breast per feed but since I now seem to have less to give her should I give her both. Will this help or will this make things worse? Also, should I express to increase my milk? Sorry for all the questions but im at a bit of a loss and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
