Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Re: Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Hi there,

im back again with another question re expressing. I've been told that it is ok to mix defrosted milk from different days, heat and then feed to baby. my question is re: mixing milk from different expressing sessions... let me try to explain... I express durin the night about 2oz and it takes me 10 to 15 mins, I put this milk in the fridge and then at the next feed in the morning, I can express another 3 oz so I add this to the milk I expressed in the night and then I freeze it... I have this weddign coming up so rather than havin lots of bags of 2 and 3 oz, I have bags of 5/6oz which will do 1 feed. Advice please.. is this ok to do? how quickly do you express. I am using the Tommee Tippee electric pump.

Hey there, now I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I've always mixed milks. To express a bottle (as in one feed) takes me a day (I'm bf'ing twins so I'm blaming that!) and I could get 2oz at 11, 1 @ 3, another 2 @ 8 etc etc and I put them all into the one bag and freeze them. Only thing is that I make sure I've them right back at the back of the fridge in the really cold part during the day while I'm waiting to add more to them!

Im still in the b/f group. Taking day by day. Nipple still cut. DD had 2 week check up with gp yesterday, he recommended not feeding from left side for 24 hours, to express. Did that & we had 2 sucessful feeds from left side today. Nipple still very sore. LC calling again tomorrow to see if shes latching on correctly.

Beechwood - you can mix ebm together from any 24 hour period, as long as its chilled beforehand. Once you have the amount you need you can freeze it.

Justwed- DD has a dirty at every change. PHN said as long as theres grainy bits in nappy shes getting hind milk.

Oh and just one more question, if my mam is feeding my LO while Im at wedding and 6oz of expressed milk is heated in warm water and only 4 is takes, can my mam use the other 2 oz for a later feed? Is it ok to reheat in warm water?

There are mixed opinions on this, but I would reuse it. Just don't heat it again.

6oz is a lot to give though, kellymom recommends 3oz per feed. When I left DD (she was 4 months) I left 4oz per feed for her & she was fine.

Girls I really struggling. I'm so tired. Still trying to breastfeed but left breast is unbelievably sore and I feel like such a failure. Nipple is bleeding, have a blocked milk duct which I'm trying so hard to unblock. I could feed on right side all day and it's the easiest thing ever, but now I can't feed on left, can't even express as it's too sore but have to keep doing it as don't want to get mastitis and want to give b/f some decent attempt. It's sore even to walk around. I don't even know what to do at this stage. To top it off Csection scar is still sore, panadol just isn't hitting the spot.

Sorrry for been such a moan. I just can't see the light at the end of the tunnel at the moment. I dont' feel like DH understand what I'm going through. When I try to talk to him all he says is 'we'll give her a bottle'. But that's what I want I just want to be able to feed my baby.

Could I just feed on one side and substitute other side wiht bottle or would that be a complete no no, would my milk supply just dry up or would left just continue making milk anyway? DH is back to work Tuesday so with Toddler I won't be able to b/f and express, it just wouldn't work.

Winter B2B - i can offer very little advice - I have been reading your posts over last while and havent contributed as I didnt have anything to say that could really help you - but after reading that last post i couldnt but reply. You are so brave - so strong - where so many would have given up days ago, you're still going strong - my hat is off to you big style. I have had blocked ducts twice - just for a few hours each time - again i cant give you any advice that im sure you havent already heard - the warm flannels (i used hot water bottle wrapped in a towel but not too hot) and warm shower water running on it as you massage - and as you said thats so sore so mayb just let the water gently run on it.
Husband sounds like a man iykwim, things really black or white - boob or bottle. Id tell him if he wnated to be helpful for the next couple of days that he could take over in between feed and that would allow you to go to bed between feeds with a hot water bottle to allow you a chance to deal with blocked duct and rest your c section scar. Not to mind letting you get some sleep and rest.
I cannot answer your question about only feeding from one side - i'm not sure how long twould take for supply to dry up.

You're anything but a failure - there are so many ppl that firstly dont try to breast feed or those that start and stop again at the slightest bump in the road (and everyone has to make the choice that is right for them) and here you are trying so so hard - only you can make that decission whether to continue or use bottle so im not going to advise either way - but i couldnt read your post and not reply :action32 :action32 :action32 :action32 from one mammy to another x

Winter, couldn't read and not reply. Don't have anymore advice to offer really - the other girls have recommended everything really. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you could try taking Nurofen as it might give you a bit more relief than paracetamol. I was told that it was safe to take when bf'ing and this is what they gave me when I was in pain with my episiotomy when I had dd. Just make sure that it's not Nurofen Plus. Hope it gets easier for you. :action32

Girls do antibiotics give babies tummy pain/wind and make them generally unsettled? I started a course yesterday and DS has been unsettled since and I'm wondering if it's linked. Poor we pet seems in pain. Not like him to cry :'(

Hi all, just a bit of advice please.

My 2 week old dd has been a slow feeder up to now. Im breastfeeding her ad phn saya she has a slight tongue tie. She has been feeding every two hours off me, every hour yesterday and more or less today. But since last night she has latched on for about 3/4 min she usually feeds 5-15 minutes and cries hysterically while on me. I think shes gettjn enough as i can hear her gulping and there is a little bit of milk on her lips when she comes off me.

I gave her 2 oz of expressed milk in a nuk bottle last night which she wolfes down. Tonight i gave her 2 .5 oz if sma again wolfed down over space of 30 min.

Anone any advice . Im shattered. Phn today just aaid once shes gaining weight which she is shes fine.

Winter, how are you doing now, you poor thing. As for pumping, I cut a hole in bra that pump could slot into for hands free pumping. Often pumped one boob while DD fed on other. Kellymom has a method of hands free pumping too using hair bobbins and bra if you do a search. What did the LC roecommend? She may be able to advise re feeding one side only. I had mastitis and needed to treat with antibiotics the second time so keep an eye or for that, it's very painful and left me shattered. Whatever happens you have tried your best and given you LO a great start so be kind to yourself

Justwed, does your phn think the tie needs to be cut. Google dr o rourke iin Maynooth, he did my DS without a referral. I am not sure in our case that it made a difference but may be worth looking into. On the other hand it could be a growth spurt and may pass after a day or two.
