Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Re: Breastfeeding Support - Part II

It may be a growth spurt, maman, so I'd let her feed as much as she wants. It's normal not to get that full feeling when the baby is feeding frequently, but these feeds are stimulating your supply so you'll produce the extra milk she needs as she grows. I'd offer the second side if she is still hungry as this will help and she will likely go back to feeding on one side once the growth spurt is over.

Hi maman. This sounds like a spurt and totally normal. Keep feeding on demand and your supply will increase fairly soon. Keep offering both sides. It is normal to feel totally soft and empty during a spurt and also that very full feeling also goes away after the first couple months. I found that during spurts my lo's took both sides but after a few days they went back to one side as my supply increased. Loads of info on Kelly mom re spurts, they are hard going. No need to pump unless you have a supply issue but this is very rare if u feed on demand. Good luck!!!
Lauri there is debate as to whether foods you eat cause wind at all to be honest. New babies can be windy no matter what. I avoided coleslaw and tried not to eat tons of green veg or spicy food for first couple months. Try to drink fennel tea a few times a day it's great for avoiding wind and also helps supply!! Xx

thanks a million for replying girls. I thought we had a growth spurt 2 weeks ago so I guess i wasnt expecting one so soon after that. Ill stick with it so, its just that my gut feeling is that I havent enough milk for her or else that its not flowing quick enough for her.
Its really great to get advise from someone on here, so thanks again x

Re foods to avoid for wind, tbh I think there's only so much you can do to help this situation. Obviously avoid the hot and spicy curry and the like lol but I found that no matter what I ate my lo's had wind and continued to f*rt really badly (loud and often) up to a coulpe of wks ago, they're nearly 6 months now! When they were v small they often woke up in the middle of the night, let our a loud cry, then a f*art and when straight back to sleep for themselves. And it didn't seem to improve it dis improve irrespective of what I ate.
So don't beat yourself up about it! I'd say a good Irish diet where we don't go mad on the herbs r spices - spuds and meat and veg lol!

Thanks girls for all your support over the weekend.
We got through it bottle free and I'm still breastfeeding. I used nipple shields over weekend and got compression patches to cope with pain. Had a number of occasions where I wanted to give up but I have battled on. I have also expressed so have 3 oz of ebm in fridge so if I do need to give bottle at least it'll be ebm.
I had lactation consultant back this morning. She's very good if it's only to give me the confidence to continue. I know I'm not over the problem (nipple still cut and bleeding) but I have a little bit of hope that I can overcome it.
We got some sleep last night (she slept from 2 to 7) so think that has definitely helped.
Had phn out to day. DD is 12 days old and is already 10oz over her birth weight, so I must be doing something right! :o)ll

Wishing well what age is she? Breast milk can have a laxative effect so I'd imagine it will stay runny for a while.

Morning girls can i join ye? I had my little girl this day last week. I started breastdi g her immediately but she had to be topped up wiyh formula in the hospital as i had two haemorrages the night i had her. Since then she is a very poor feeder. She latches on for aboit 5/10 min only then an hour later again might get 15 min out of her then 2 hours later it starts again. The phn seema to think she might have very slight tongue tie. We atill give a bottle of sma in middle of night. Yesterday she fed great 30 min at most feeds but last night it was every hour she was screaming so i fed her once i knew it wasnt nappy cold etc and she fed for 15 min each time. I seem to have full boobs so dont think i am not lacking supply. Tried to express 2 days ago for the middle of thw nihht feed bit hardly anythjng came out.

Hi just wed! Congrats on your new little girl. What makes you think she's a poor feeder? Is she not gaining weight? The amount of time they spend feeding doesn't really mean much, some babies are faster than others! She may just be an efficient feeder and get plenty in fifteen mins. My second daughter was super fast like that. Remember her tummy is the size of a walnut so she needs to feed little and often. Feeding at night is good for supply so I'd try and wean her off the night time bottle and breast feed her instead. Feeding every hour can happen at this age she may be having a growth spurt. If I were I I'd get to a la leche league or cuidiu breast feeding group where u can get advice and support. Sounds like u have done a great job! It must have been rough to keep going when u weren't well yourself. Eat and drink plenty. Eat porridge it's great for supply. Try to sleep whenever u get a chance... I know it's hard . Just keep feeding her whenever she wants and you'll have plenty of milk for her

Great advice there Silini2. I'm so glad to be back on this thread. I'm a bit clueless on everything and feel like I'm learning all over again but I will log on often and if I can offer any advice to anyone I will do my best :lvs

Hi just wed,

I agree with the advice given to you. the length of time feeding doesnt equate to the amount of milk she is getting. As long as you get her weighed you will know how she is getting on with feeding. its frustrating there is no measuring like with bottle feeding, but weigh ins are the only way.

Just looking for some advice for myself here too. Ive recently introduced a couple of bottles for my daughter. Its going well and i continue to feed her myself around that. However my supply has seemed to drastically reduced. when i express i barely get any anymore. i know a baby gets more out that a pump, but is there and tips or tricks for increasing supply??desperately want to increase mine as want to pump a lot for storage, so when I do stop breast feeding myself, ill have a freezer supply to work from.

thanks in advance

Thanks girls. Today now she fed for about 10/15 min and slept 4 hours as we were out. Since 4 she has only had about 8/9 min per feed about 2 hours apart and nownhas just fell asleep so will see how tonight goes. Phn rang today amd i told her about last night so she said give a dodi if shes like that tonight but j dont want to do that.
I suppose i think shes bad feedr silini because she only latches on for a few min so not getting any hind milk in that space if time hence hungry again an hour later.

Also most times during a feed she doea a really loud fart which is good as its wind etx but fills her nappy. I know breastfed babies have runny nappies but is it usual that its every nappy?
