Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Re: Breastfeeding Support - Part II

Postby Winter B2B » Sun May 06, 2022 3:47 pm

My left boob is officially broken. The nipple(which was seriously cut) has healed up but the breast is too sore for words. Mid feed she has started shaking&pulling at breast&doesnt let go until I unlatch her. She has pulled at it so much that its even sore when shes not feeding. I dont think I have mastitis or blocked ducts or thrush but just a sore breast. Don't know whether I should go to doctor or give it time. Is there any muscles in breast that she could have pulled?
I can cope with it during the day when I can watch her carefully while feeding, the minute she starts twisting&turning and pulling at it I can unlatch her but at night I react too slowly.
I was wondering if I stop feeding from left side at night (between 11 & 9) will right side produce additional milk&will left stop getting full so I dont wake with a really sore engorged left breast?

Hi winter. Yes that could work but it may take a few nights so if u are engorged just express off a bit for comfort with hand or pump. Is it sore all the time like bruised?? Or for a certain amount of time after the feed?

Can I ask a silly question please?

Do bf babies "drop" a feed the way ff babies do?

DD is 9 months and is still fed 4 times a day (and once or twice at night!!). She seems to be slowing down slightly on the solids, as in she's not eating the amounts she was and it's taking ages to get the food into her. Today I had to give her fruit puree interspersed with her lunch and dinner to get it into her, otherwise her mouth was clamped shut.

I was reading Gina Ford's weaning book today and she said to feed in the morning and between lunch and tea and at night (3 times at 9 months).

What do you think?

Thanks girls!!

Yes they start to slow down their intake at this age. I was only giving three breastfeeding at nine months. It could also be teeth though and maybe just temporary...

Hi Anne boylen thanks for reply. In a way it's good to know it's temporary and will hopefully ease.

Its sore almost all the time. Pain is worse directly after feeding but pain doesn't completely go away. Its like I ran a marathon without a sports bra!

When does it get easier/enjoyable?

Hi ladies, I'm looking for a bit of info. My ds is 17 days old and I'm bf him every 3 hours at a minimum( more if he wants it) The hospital told me to wake him at nite for his feeds which I do. I'm wondering though at what point do I stop waking him to feed him at nite, everyone keeps telling me babies start to sleep thru at 6 weeks, but I'm guessing this is a gradual process. Do I sstart spreading the nite feeds out longer between 4-6 weeks or something?

Hi all starting to struggle big time with the feeding. I dont think im producing enough for her as she is screaming with hunger even if she lasts 20 min on me so im supplimenting her with 2 oz formula after each breastfeed. Getting her weighed today so will see if amshr has gained any in the last week or so. I dont know how long i can keep gpung as its so draining, even with the formula top ups she still hungry under 2 hours later, we havent slept thw last 3 nights with her being so hungry all the time. I managed to express 3 oz this morning and she took this an hour ago from a bottle.

I never woke my baby for a feed - she always knew her own appetite and would waken herself if she was hungry. Babys will never starve themselves so just follow their lead.
I remember the first night she slept past her usual wake-up time - she was 10 weeks and we were on holidays in Portugal. She went to sleep at 8pm as usual and woke up at 5am. I woke at 4:45 in a panic thinking I'd missed her crying out for us. I looked in her cot and she was fast asleep! She used to waken to feed around 1am up to that. Trust your baby and both of you sleep well x

justwed, would you try feeding lying down so that you are getting some rest? Every 2 hours is fairly normal at your stage, if you're getting enough feeds in during the day, that should start to stretch at night though. SOmetimes the baby will want to be at the breast for comfort too, or to increase your supply.

Unless there's a medical problem, there's no need to wake a baby for feeds. Sometimes the midwives want you to do this the first couple of nights, and forget to tell you not to do it when you go home!!

Thanks milis i feed lying down at night alright but she falls asleep after only a few mins. She wont wake up then for me even if i change her nappy! So she wakes again an hour later and its the same thing. She has a slight tongue tie so she cant latch on properly. Cant get apt for this til end of june so have to try to keep going til then.

I never wake her for feeds as she screams for feeds when she wants it! Also have tried giving her dodi but she doenst really keep it in for long.

Mrsg I def wouldn't be still waking lo at this age unless there is some issue with weight gain or supply! Get some sleep....
Justwed have u been to a breastfeeding counsellor or group to look at why supply is an issue?? My guess is that it may be down to the top ups. If u top up after every feed your supply is not going to increase to match the baby's demand and so that's why topping up after every feed can be a bit of a slippery slope. If you want to keep bf I'd suggest you talk to a lactation cons maybe about trying to cut out the top ups. You could pump after every feed this increases supply. I had to do this with dd1 at start as she was jaundiced and not gaining.

Just wed just wanted to add that my dd2 had slight tongue tie too. She had quite a shallow latch but as she got bigger she def got better at feeding. She fed very often too every two hours, even at five or six months she was feeding every 2.5 hours so maybe this was connected.

Also my lactation cons told me dodi good for mild tongue tie so maybe encourage it a bit more. She also got me to pull dd's chin down to make her latch deeper when feeding. If u keep doing this it may help

Winter, are you sure it's not a blocked duct? It feels like you were punched in the breast and there doesn't always have to be accompanying redness or lumps. What does the LC say about the pain?

Justwed, does she stay on longer if you do breast compressions while she's sucking? http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content. ... ame=doc-BC

Thanks girls, i try to express every morning for the middle of the night feeds but dont always get enough. Im eating porridge every morning too to try and increase it.

Blackbird she wont stay on longer have tried the conpressions. Although last night she stayed on about 30 mins which is a record, but was hungry again an hour later.

Cant find any lactation consultants in limerick, maybe im googling thr wrong thing. I know theres a breastfeeding class in the maternity once a week but cant remeber when. Will ask phn today if she knows.
