  • Irish Designer Week: Sarah Foy Designs

    Wednesday 1 February 2022 - Supplier Spotlight, Fashion - Tags: wedding-dress, exclusive-designer, irish-designer, irish-designer-week, sarah-foy

Sarah Foy is a home-grown talent. At Sarah Foy Designs she crafts fresh and exclusive bridal designs dreamed up and created in her personal studio in Clontarf, Dublin. As part of Irish Designer Week, WeddingsOnline editor Karen Birney speaks to Sarah about her influences and methods and why she thinks the future of the Irish design industry is in the hands of the designers themselves.

    sarah foy designs

Sarah Foy's work has long been influenced by her years of travel, her immersion in the wider fashion industry and her experience elegantly dressing women in all their many forms. Her hand-made, one-of-a-kind, often eco-friendly gowns are born of a desire to create something timeless and familiar, yet fresh and distinctive.

“Simple, soft, feminine silhouettes really inspire my work,” she says. “I love designing pieces that at their core are elegant, but ultimately unique in some detail,”

This year, Sarah is looking to the laid-back glamour and elegant simplicity of the roaring 20s for inspiration.

“I have been influenced a lot this year by 1920s glamour,” she says, noting a penchant for liquid satins and detailed embellished pieces. “The effortless sophistication of that era really works well in bridal and evening wear.”

Sarah’s unique designs are a process, one that she strives to make exciting and pleasant for both her client and for herself.

At her little-piece-of-bridal-paradise in Clontarf, Sarah holds private one-to-one consultations where she invites brides to share their individual style, ideas, hopes and expectations.

    A Partnership

The entire process is a partnership, a joint venture between bride and designer, where the bride's ideas are encouraged, her mind opened, and in the end, her dreams made real.

From the initial sketches, design selections and mock ups, to adjustments, fabric selections and final fittings, Sarah thoroughly examines the fit of the garment, so you feel flawless and confident when it comes to your moment to shine.

“We dress brides to suit their shape, style and personality,” says Sarah. “This makes one of the most important aspects of any bride's wedding day also one of the most enjoyable. “

When the cut is finalised, those extra delicate details are added in the form of individually covered buttons, hand beading and intricate lace embellishments. “We create a unique piece for each client,” she says, “spending time on the small details and always trying to consider the overall look for the day rather than just the dress we create,” says Sarah.

Sarah’s personal wedding service doesn’t stop there, she also designs for mother of the bride, bridesmaids and flower girls. What better person to entrust your mother and best friend to than another woman who knows you style intimately and will be with you every step of the way? "These outfits and dresses are all created to blend with the overall look of your wedding,” she says.

    Buying Irish

“The bride’s focus should firstly be finding the dress for her,” Sarah replies when asked if a bride should consider buying Irish designs. “If that dress is Irish made then it is an added bonus."

Sarah believes the future of the Irish design industry however is in the hands of the industry members themselves. “I think as Irish designers, we need to ensure that customer service and high quality standards co-exist with the most innovative Irish designs,” she says.

  • Irish Designer Week: Edel Ramberg Millinery

    Tuesday 31 January 2022 - Supplier Spotlight, News, Irish Designer Week, Fashion - Tags: bridal-accessory-design, irish-milinery, irish-designer-week-on-weddingsonline, bridal-headpiece, edel-ramberg

    By Amy Croffey

Edel Ramberg Designs is an Irish label based in Galway, specialising in hats and headpieces.

Edel started to make bespoke bridal headpieces a few months after she was approached by a bride who was looking for an alternative to a veil.

“My headpieces are another option for people who don't feel that the traditional veil suits their dress or personality,” says Edel. “The bridal headpiece is something unique to them that they often help me to design and can wear again and again!”

Edel’s collections are all ready-to-wear headpieces but her bridal range needs to be pre-ordered. She has a range of samples and shapes in her studio and creates a bridal pieces using the client’s head, face and dress for inspiration.

    Pillbox

“If a dress is quite vintage in style I work from there or if something is very fitted and 'Jackie-O' in cut we may try a pillbox base. It’s always down to the mood the dress creates,” she adds.

    WOL

She would describe her designs as individual and sculptural, she is not into “fussy” pieces with loads of feathers and veiling.

“I would rather stay true to my style and keep things clean and chic. I like to embellish with quality materials, such as Swarovski and lace, rather than a mix of feathers and beads. It’s more about elegance and quality for me, rather than overkill," says Edel.

For wedding guests her collections are typically bought by women ranging in ages 30-60. Her bridal customers are typically in their twenties to early thirties and are looking for something special, unique and something that will compliment their face, shape and dress.

    Overall look

“My clients are usually ladies who know their style and are keen to create something to finish off their overall look,” says Edel.

Edel’s advice to brides-to-be who are trying to find the ‘perfect’ style for their wedding day is to never bring too many people shopping for the veil or headpiece.

“I have seen brides in tears over varied opinions. You have to wear it on the day so you have to love it,” she says. “You should also be 100% sure about the piece, as it is something that will be in your wedding album for years. You need to be sure it doesn't hide too much of your face and that it highlights all your best features!”

Edel believes it is always great to buy Irish but especially so with bridal fashion.

“It’s fantastic to get the support of Irish women as weddings are such a big tradition here. One bridal headpiece can often lead to several ladies getting in touch for their big day, which is great for any business as the knock-on effect can mean recommendations for local salons, make-up artists etc,” she says.

Edel admits the choice is not always there when trying to source certain products so people are often forced to look outside of Ireland for selections and price. However, she thinks now more than ever people can personally get in touch with designers to see what other options are available to them.

Materials for headpieces are mostly manufactured in the Czech Republic, France or other parts of Europe but rather than going to these suppliers directly for a small order, Edel tries to source from suppliers here.

“I always feel it’s better to support a small local supplier rather than buying from elsewhere paying VAT and in some cases exchange rates,” she adds.

  • Photographer of the Month - October 2011 - Give us a Goo Photography

Wednesday 5 October 2021 - Supplier Spotlight - Tags: photographer

    give us a goo photography

"We would like to recommend Phil Voon (Give us a GOO) as a photographer for all styles of weddings. I happened to be a very unorganised and last minute kind of Bride. So Phil’s relaxed nature and adaptability really suited our style. We had a marquee style wedding which you can imagine would benefit from a dry day. We have since been told we had the wettest day for the summer of 2011. Because Phil had scouted the venue prior to the day, he had looked at options for all types of weather and had some clever idea’s to make the most of a very wet day. I had asked for lots of action shots of people socialising and enjoying themselves rather than posed shots. When it came to the bridal party photo’s, we had so much fun taking our photo’s and the smiles and laughter are 100% genuine. I have been to wedding’s where the photography can be a very strenuous and long part of the day, but we had a completely different experience. We have great photo’s that are original and truly capture the quintessence of our day. Phil is great at putting people at ease and whatever type of picture you ask him for he delivered upon. I have had so many people comment on how nice Phil was and how amazing the photo’s are. I would have no doubt recommending him to my friends as a photographer for their special day."

  • Interview with Tara Fay

Tuesday 31 August 2022 - Advice, Supplier Spotlight - Tags: None

In case you haven't heard the best wedding news ever, let me enlighten you, Tara Fay, Ireland's premier bespoke wedding planner will be holding a wedding masterclass at Solis Lough Eske Castle Hotel in Donegal on September 26th and 27th!

So let me break this down...this means you can get wedding tips and advice from Ireland's best wedding planner at one of Ireland's bestest 5 star venues (and WeddingsOnline.ie Wedding Venue of the Year)...it's a no brainer. Oh and Joanne (the WOL Customer Service Manager) and I will be there too! I will be the girl grinning like a little school girl in the front row.

    Tara Fay

So here is an interview with the master herself, Tara Fay of Xena Productions.

    What is your job exactly?

I am a wedding planner, the best way to describe what I do would be to say, I am your stage manager and you as the client are my directors.  So I will take direction from you, but help and guide you in your decisions, but ultimately it is always your decision, as it’s your wedding!

How long have you been in wedding planning?

I set up Xena Productions in 1997 when I returned from Los Angeles where I worked with a party planner there, on weddings, parties and events all over California. I was the first company In Ireland to specialize in weddings and private parties.

What do you love most about your job?

Even though I work on all types and sizes of events, I love weddings the most.  You are sharing in one of the most important life events of your client.  I still keep in touch with loads of clients and get sent photos of new babies etc.

What do you think every bride should know before they start planning a wedding?

That it’s their wedding, so take advice but it’s your decision ultimately.  Remember to enjoy it!

What’s the biggest mistake you see brides and grooms make?

Trying to do too much and keep too many people happy, that they forget about themselves and the commitment they are making to each other, and it’s only the week of the wedding that it hits them.

Why did you decide to team up with Solis Lough Eske to hold a wedding masterclass?

I think Lough Eske is such amazing venue (in fact it has been chosen as one of the most romantic venues in Ireland to get married and will feature on UTV next year), it really has tailored itself specifically for weddings, I would be hard pushed to find fault with it and believe me, I have looked!  The fact that they are so focused on weddings and minding the couples gives me such confidence to partner with them for this masterclass.  Also the venue is so relaxing it will enable the couples or the brides to relax and ask the questions they really want to.

What will the class entail (besides a chance to learn from the best!)?

Attendees will really have time to spend with each expert as there are times assigned for mini seminars, also the fact that each expert is on site for a day or two, will give couples the chance to ask questions face to face or come back and ask questions later, I always find couples remember the most important question five minutes after a meeting.

Will there be any tips for the budget conscious bride?

Each expert will be including budget and costs in their presentations, an amazing opportunity for brides and grooms to pick the brains of some of the industry’s best.

What are some practical wedding planning tips that attending brides will learn?

The hotel itself will talk people through planning a menu, stationary and calligraphy expert will talk through ordering the invitations and the time involved.  I will be giving an overall planning masterclass and will be available to answer questions over both days.  So in essence, it’s nearly a one to one consultation for each couple at the masterclass.

To book your place at the masterclass contact Solis Lough Eske Castle Hotel + 00353 (0) 74 97 25100!

Thursday 29 July 2022 - Supplier Spotlight, Decor Inspiration, Colour Palettes - Tags: the-brooklodge, venue-inspiration-board

I'll admit I am slightly obsessed with The Brooklodge...especially for someone who has never even been to Brooklodge. But everything I hear about the stunning country house hotel points to the fact that it is amazing! Making a visit is definitely on the top of my to-do list. The ivy covered building and understated scenery makes me think a romantic palette would set the tone perfectly.

You really can't beat the location of The Clarence. Right on the Quays, city centre with spectacular views, it really is the epitome of city centre chic.I think the perfect palette for The Clarence would take inspiration from the beautiful Dublin skyline and the stunning exterior of the hotel. • Venue Inspiration: Solis Lough Eske Castle

    Tuesday 27 July 2022 - Colour Palettes, Supplier Spotlight - Tags: solis-lough-eske, venue-inspiration-board

Solis Lough Eske Castle Hotel is one of my favourite venues in the world. I LOVE it! (And not just because I spent my mini-moon there.) I think it's romantic, quaint and the ideal venue for an Irish wedding. So I decided to use it as the first muse for our newest venture, the 'venue inspiration board'. The 'venue inspiration board' takes a wedding location in Ireland and builds a wedding theme/concept around it to help brides get ideas for their own wedding. I imagine Solis Lough Eske as the perfect canvas for a modern elegance theme. Something that pays tribute to the fairy tale castle wedding, with a chic and stylish edge.

  • Come Rain or Shine...

    Tuesday 28 April 2022 - Supplier Spotlight - Tags: real-wedding

Evonne Bruton & Jonathon Holland tie the knot.

Come rain or shine Come rain or shine

    Dress from White Orchid.

Photos from Roslyn Byrne, Couple.ie"It was the worst gale blowing Ireland has had in years and we were having a wedding ceremony in a marquee!"

It was the worst wind and rain Ireland has known in 91 years, but Evonne Bruton and Jonathan Holland decided they were not going to let the elements ruin their big day. Proving that no matter what the weather brings, with the love of your life by your side and an easy going attitude, it is always possible to have the wedding of your dreams.

"Friends had to stop their car on the way to the wedding to move a tree off the road, and there wasn't a hope of our helicopter making it! We kept thinking the weather would get better but it only got worse as the day wore on," Evonne remembers.

Their relationship has always had a good amount of excitement; the couple met through a good mutual friend who thought they would make a great couple. After much persuasion, Evonne allowed her number to be given to Jonathan and after even more persuasion, Jonathan called her.

"From the first conversation as I sat in Pearse Street Station, trying to have a conversation over the moving trains, we got on well. Our first meeting was in Caf en Seine on Wednesday, 26th January 2005, the huge wave of emotion that we felt as we met for the first time was incredible. We both knew that this was something very real and very big." Evonne says.
